Back to the Moonshaes. Has anyone ran a campaign in the Moonshaes? I know it's based off of Arthurian Britain. I was wondering because I'd like to set a campaign there. And they are big, actually. I think they are as big as the British Isles put together.
But I'm either setting a campaign in Waterdeep or the Moonshaes, and I was in love with the Moonshaes since I first read Darkwalker on Moonshae by Douglas Niles. And yes, I read all three novels. I think Darkwell is the only one I don't have. |

Posted - 28 Aug 2025 : 20:24:19 I know you're playing 3E, but for 5E Eric Menge and Baldman Games have put out a 5e era Moonshaes guide and slew of Moonshaes adventures (several interconnected series actually) on DM's Guild you could probably respec. |

Shameless plug
Or just pick up this "pay what you want" ... so a nickel is fine... The Metahel Pantheon of Anchorome. Completely fit to realmslore making one wonder... are they Faerunian gods? Norse Gods? Something else? Were Sifya and Valigar (aka Sif and Loki .. or is it really the Red Knight and Valigan Thirdborn?) really the brains behind Rak Nir Ruik as a means to entrap their enemies?

If you are planning an AD&D campaign, you could pull directly from the Deities and Demigods book for inspiration...using the Celtic Gods there to "mesh" with Forgotten Realms deities "as they are seen in the Moonshaes" even being differently then they are seen elsewhere. Jannath/Chauntea is already different in the Moonshaes than elsewhere...so it isn't a stretch to have different aspects on the Isles than they are seen as in the rest of Faerun.

Yeah. The Earthmother is primarily an aspect of Chauntea. I'm not planning a AD&D campaign, though. I'm planning a D&D 3e game. Why? It's a surprise. |

Would Sidhe "work" in The Realms? If so, would they be a type of elf or would they be superficially similar to (yet ultimately distinct from) Corellon's creations?
I mean, fey is a creature type in most editions of Dungeons & Dragons, covering everything from pixies to satyrs to nymphs. Titania is in Monster Mythology, and she's mentioned as an ally of Corellon in Demihuman Deities. It's not exactly a stretch worthy of Mr. Fantastic to consider them a similar and related but not identical set of entities stemming from a potential common ancestor.
A degree of separation has its appeal. Not everything need be connected; sometimes, a coincidence is merely a coincidence. |

That was an unnecessary disclaimer; not all of us are disciples of Ed Greenwood nor is any setting/gaming philosophy a requisite of posting on Candlekeep.
Just covering my bases.

I don't particularly like the Moonshaes (I'm more of a Moonsea man, y'see) so I don't know if there's many adventures specific to the region. But it was quite popular for a time so I'd be surprised if nobody's done it.
I have played Arthurian campaigns. Largely based on the 2E Historical Campaign HR3: Celts Campaign Sourcebook and on the Arthurian Mythos from the original 1E Deities & Demigods. https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Celts_Campaign_Sourcebook
And I've seen a lot of homebrews seem to invariably focus almost exclusively on Arthurian versions of cavaliers and paladins. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ad%26d+arthurian+campaign https://www.reddit.com/r/DnDHomebrew/comments/150u4jm/king_arthur_setting_guide/
I've met a few people over the years who were avidly passionate (even fanatical) about King Arthur, Celtic culture, etc. But, to be honest, I've seen them all dabble in D&D then move on to other RPGs which are far more dedicated to replicating or emulating Arthurian settings.
Yeah, I know about that last part. I have a copy of King Arthur Pendragon, 4th Edition. I also picked up a copy of Historical Reference: the Celts. I also picked up a book on Celt History, and GURPS: Celtic Myth.
I'll check your resources, Ayrik. Niles' Moonshaes were meant to be a separate world built by TSR UK, but that was canned and were moved to the Forgotten Realms if I remember my history correctly.
My aim is to make the Moonshaes come alive for my players. So I might be using FR2 Moonshae and some aspects from GURPS: Celtic Myth to bring it more to life. |
