Something from a later edition, perhaps? |

The reason I asked is that as conceited as Balagos is, the question is why would he limit his territory to south of the Chionthar? Why not include Sunset Vale since it really isn't that far from the Smokespires lair. And why not spend more time there?
I am thinking the reason is Shhuusshuru. I am thinking that not too long after Balagos claimed his area (and that included Sunsut Vale in his mind), he got a nocturnal visit (actually, an ambush) in his Smokespire lair where she put the fear of Shhuusshuru in him. That gave him his paranoid ways of the current day. It is also another reason why he has distain for the Cult of the Dragon and dracoliches.
Option 2 is that it was both Varalla and Shhuusshuru. They had worked out a secret deal and both showed up and intimidated Balagos. That is now why Shhuusshuru is working to take over the Darkhold after the Zhents destroyed Varalla: she feels she has a prior claim, and the area is rightfully her's. Varalla's destruction may have also been a consideration as to why decided to become a dracolich. |
