I know this isn't an amazing idea, but I got it the other night in watching rings of power where Galadriel was "going to the west". I've always known at a high level some of what Tolkien had done with his elves and the western land, but when I first tried to read the Silmarillion I was only 12 and not ready for that much detail (god to think that was almost 40 years ago). I always figured that the defenses of Evermeet somewhat came from that and somewhat from the defenses of the islands that Elric came from (another older set of older books that I've only perused lightly).

So, my thought revolve around the notes that Queen Amlaruil can teleport ships on command that approach the island. It also hits on the idea that Ed always wanted "Anchorome" to be a bunch of islands in/around Evermeet. It also hits on a bit of the lore that we keep seeing from AJA that, while homebrew, I greatly appreciate of ships going to the west for things related to the moon and other things.

So, sorry for all that lead up. The idea is this. What if Evermeet is surrounded by "moving pockets of mist" that ACTS like the mists of Ravenloft, but in a different fashion. What if they act as portals that are a RESULT of the magic of the elven sundering that copied/moved Evermeet from Faerie to Toril. I picture these as moving people to various places including the moon's seas, the feywild, possibly the planet that is the original "Faerie" that the elves came from to Toril, and maybe even water worlds within realmspace like Karpri where there are existing elven populations.

I was thinking maybe the elves can't CONTROL these moving "mist portals" but maybe they can TRACK them. This would be an easy way to explain ships that went to the west and just "disappeared" over time, or those who returned reporting some island, only to go there and it was no longer existing, etc... If they're only there as a magical mishap related to the Sundering too, it makes for a much more "palatable" thing in my eyes as well, as it becomes something that shows the elves once again messing up, but then taking advantage of the mishap.

Sound like a good idea?

If it does, do any particular mist portal ideas pop in your head? One idea that came to my own mind was the story behind Jakandor Island of War where some humans known as the Knorr (or Knorrmen) who have a very viking/celt/native american mix feel that were travelling on the ocean... were surrounded by mist and ended up in another world.

It also opens up a lot of possibilities for the people that became the Illuskans and explains them coming from other worlds the they themselves BELIEVE exist still to the west.

It might also open up the possible explanation for the disappearance of MOST of the survivors of the ruined kingdom of Haunghdannar but occasional reappearance in the north, if they sailed westward and ended up in another world.

Yeah, this was my first thought (transporting them to island chains in the feywild), such that this phenomenon helps explain away "islands" that aren't there, and what one person says is there can be totally different from someone else.

I would simply transport them to the other side of Evermeet. Have the ship engulfed in mist for a day or two, and when it lifts, they're still headed in the same direction, but only by looking at the stars and such do they realize they've covered a lot more distance than expected. This makes it less likely that they'll realize there was something in that chunk of ocean that they didn't see.
