Don't get me wrong, each forename and surname are good -- it's just putting them together to get those duplicated sounds that kills it for me.
And I know others will disagree, but I've never liked the name Jack Ravenwild. Ravenwild itself is pretty cool for a name -- but giving that name to a person from Raven's Bluff? That's where it breaks down. And Jack is about as Realms-ish a name as Bartholomew.
I think you mean, Jaer Kell Wildhame! Also I think it's fairly common to put your city of origin into your surname in the Realms, no? A lot of people just go "of Sembia" or "of Westgate", so Ravenwild is a bit of a step up.
What are people's favorite Realms names? Hard for me to separate names from characters that I really like.
"Of Suzail" or something like that is a descriptor, not a surname. Using that, this character would be Jack Ravenwild of Raven's Bluff. That's like Tom Waterfall of Waterdeep or Dick Silverystaff of Silverymoon. |

Sorry, more "inspiration" than "direct copy" From Steven himself: "more useful to the GM and players to know more about the Red Sashes or Force Grey (aka the "Justice League of Waterdeep" ) than to hear about people you're rarely apt to meet." http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3280
Although perhaps not entirely on him: "Well, Jeff Grubb was the one who created them, named them, and explained them to me on my first asking: 'They're the Justice League of Waterdeep under Batman's, er, Khelben's control.'" http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3802&whichpage=9

Something like that (credited to Jorkens, wherever he might be):
quote: Again, I said above what the examples where. Its the original villages of Netheril that are named after band members. There being individual references to songs is something I have never heard about, but I never read Slades books that much. The villages are:Fenwick, Gers, Gilan, Gustaf, Moran, Nauseef, and Janick.
Ray Fenwick: Mostly session musician. Guitarist of Ian Gillan band. Ian Gillan: Vocalist of Episode Six, Deep Purple, Ian Gillan band, Gillan, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple again. John Gustafson: Bass. Merceybeats, Quartermass, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan band. Mike Moran. Mostly produces, but played Keyboards with Ian Gillan band. Mostly the Keyboards of both Gillan and Ian Gillan band were handled by Colin Towns; his name might be a part of the joke as all the names are used for settlements. Mark Nauseef: Drums. Worked with Elf, Ian Gillan Band, Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, Phil Lynott etc. In edition more experimental music. Janick Gers. Guitar. Member of Gillan and Iron Maiden.
As for using references like this. I never liked it. Its an in joke that is pointless if you dont know the band and irritating if you do.
I've always thought of the N:EoM as a fine Mystara product that was horribly shoe-horned into the Realms. I suppose slade doesn't get as much criticism for his naming conventions because the specifics of the Netheril setting are in the far past/far away for most campaigns. And, also, 'cause Salvatore is, like, right there.

It apparently was a gift from Javalar to the young woman (whom some say is secretly the mother of his grandchild). Javalar and Belűndrae's father Bellondar have become close friends over the last few years and are deeply protective of the young woman, and she attends any Roaringhorn family party to which Javalar or his retinue come. Whenever she does, she's treated "as a princess" by the Roaringhorns, who afford the Highcoin lass much respect.

Posted - 28 Jun 2020 : 19:35:16 I once had a gnome NPC who had a "familiar" that was a fairy. What was special was that he had no familiar, it was an illusion of a fairy that he would talk through with ventriloquism. He was also not known to be a gnome, because he himself worked as a spy for "some gnomes in the sunrise mountains near Thay". Consider my surprise when almost two decades later, the hidden gnomish settlement of Songfarla was created in no less than the sunrise mountains near Thay. I never really did much with him, except using him as an NPC in some stories I posted online or just some general roleplay opportunities. I had included him in my list of Thayan NPC's that had my version of the Zulkirs back before Spellbound introduced the official ones (said characters then became secondary but powerful NPC's in my personal Thay). Anyway, what stuck out was the name of the fairy, for its last name... it was something like
Fibbicus Taradiddler (for Fibs and Taradiddles…. i.e. lies and lies)
In the same vein I now create a few spies in the city of Waterdeep. I like it so much, I may post it over in AJA's thread as well and see if together we can link it to some of his NPC's (or some canon or someone else's NPC's) for fun.
Mythalye Calumnyator (names relate to "myth a lie and calumny") - Mythalye Calumnyator is tall, pale-golden haired, pointed ears, with milky white skin, and amber eyes. She says she is a "star elf", and the rumors in the street are that she is a swanmay, for she has several times "accidentally" been seen to change into a swan in alleys and such and fly off. She is known to be a bard of some skill, as well as a priestess of Lurue. She is nearly always seen with her familiar "Carrottop", a male pixie "ranger" with light green skin and a long mane of braided, orange hair who rides upon a blue nightingale. This blue nightingale, known as Jingale though most think its name is "Jingles", is thought to be an awakened bird, for she is often seen to seemingly be talking to the bird. Like any good follower of Lurue, these are not the only such talking animals in her midst, for she has also been seen to be talking with her stalwart pegasi pony, "Forji", a rambunctious ferret nicknamed "Fibry", and her pet turtle, "Mr. Tyrtell", which she often places in the center of any table in which she's operating and feeds fibrous foods such as lettuce, cabbage, and carrots . Some believe she is an agent for the Fochlucan Lyrists of Silverymoon, though she always openly dissuades folk who ask her if she is part of that organization... some would say almost too earnestly, as if to hide her affiliation to them. She is newly come to the city within the last year, but already she has been seen in conversations with agents of the Moonstars, harpers, Elaith Craulnober, and even the swashbuckling dark elf, Jarlaxle.
Mythalye is often seen accompanied by several other individuals. Her most common companion is a muscular, female half moon elf ranger with wild tangled red hair and wearing thigh high boots, a colorful wool kilt with leather strap underskirt, and a colorful silken frock under a studded leather vest that seemingly changes color to match her kilt as needed. This companion, known as Bryanna, has a love of dance that drags many men from their seats wherever she goes, but also a quick temper should anyone threaten Mythalye. She's also aided by a moon elf female with silvery hair and amber eyes, Mendaceti Feywings, who is also a fledgling Knight of the Flying Hunt of Nimbral who serves Lurue. She is also known to have a rogue shade friend named Prevari, whom she helped escaped the controlling fist of the Netherese, and whose shadowy presence often watches her protectively from the shadows if she goes into a dangerous part of town or into areas such as Skullport. Though Prevari never speaks much, the shade is obviously smitten with Mythalye, as his attention never seems to waver from her protection and any who threaten her are met with swift and terrible magics. Occasionally, Mythalye is also seen in the presence of a male star elf, Merrysong, who appears to arrive upon her call, and whose skill with a blackglass sword is a vision to behold.
In truth, Mythalye is an "Ellefolk of Shee descent" who came from the moon (see the 2nd edition Shadow Rift entry for Arak, Shee for general description information). While a bard in truth, her religion is truly that of Leira not Lurue. She and all of her ellefolk companions wear various items of radiance resistance (magical items which stop the first 5 points of radiant energy damage caused by spells, magic items or sunlight, and gives resistance versus radiant energy that exceeds 11 points of damage). In her instance, this item is a circlet surrounded by small silver crescent moon's made of moonstone and which appears to have other powers as well as being surrounded by a permanent blue-violet faerie fire effect.
Mythalye and her companions are on a mission from the moon. A little over a year ago, their society was pierced by a member of the Unseen, a doppelganger organization based in Waterdeep, who had infiltrated the crew of a visiting spelljamming vessel. The Unseen Doppelganger had been uncovered as a doppelganger by the residents of the moon rather than by his own crew, leading them on a merry chase through one of the ports at the Leiran Trading Center before finally commandeering an elven flitter and escaping. Interrogation of the crew revealed that they had been active in the city of Waterdeep, and thus a team of infiltration and tracking specialists were sent to the city to hunt down and root out this Unseen before word could be spread to the surface world of the ellefolk presence upon the moon. Unfortunately, though the team found the doppelganger and captured him, they also found out that he had revealed some of their secrets to his fellow Unseen (an organization that the moon's residents had never even heard of). Thus, the team has set themselves the mission to hunt down and destroy as many of the Unseen in Waterdeep as they can ferret out.
"Carrottop" aka Perjorri Alfenborn ("ellefolk of Alfen Descent") – Perjorri Alftenborn is a male ellefolk of Alfen Descent (see the 2nd edition Shadow Rift entry for Arak, Alfen for general description information). He appears to have skin of a light green shade and a puff of orange hair that makes him stand out whereever he is located. Perjorri plays the role of a familiar for Mythalye, but is in truth not beholden to obey Mythalye, and in truth the two are sometimes at odds with one another as the simple and good Alfen does not approve of some of Mythalye's methods. Still, he understands that things are the way they are because “there's a threat to his homeland that must be rooted out”. Perjorri does NOT like the Unseen, from what he's seen of them, and he is fully vested in the cause of rooting out these evil influencers. Perjorri is a druid of Eldath who values peaceful solutions if at all possible, and who was sent along on the mission more to provide his healing capabilities than anything else. Like Mythalye, Perjorri spends the majority of his time in his natural form, though he can also change into a hummingbird or bee per his racial abilities, as well as wild shaping into larger creatures if necessary to scout an area without drawing undue attention.
"The Blue Nightingale Mount of Carrottop" aka "Jingale the talking nightingale" aka Merrysong aka Jingale Merrysong ("ellefolk of Shee Descent") – Jingale Merrysong is a male ellefolk of Shee Descent (see the 2nd edition Shadow Rift entry for Arak, Shee for general description information). He is a hexblade in service to the Archfey known as the Raven Queen who has been tasked with protecting Mythalye while on her mission to track down the Unseen. In this endeavour, he is always around Mythalye, but he appears to be a simple blue nightingale named “Jingale” that poses as the mount of her “familiar”. Occasionally Mythalye talks to him, such that folk believe him to simply be an awakened nightingale, for that's the lie that Mythalye spreads about him. When she is in danger, he often flies out of sight and transforms into his normal self, and its also not unusual for him to fly off in bird form to “relieve himself” in order to transform and use charm magics on Mythalye's guests from hiding.
Mendaceti Feywings (“ellefolk of Shee Descent”) - Mendaceti Feywings is a female ellefolk of Shee Descent (see the 2nd edition Shadow Rift entry for Arak, Shee for general description information) with long silver hair, pale skin, and amber eyes. She's typically seen wearing glassteel full plate armor which enfolds teal colored peacock feathers and a sky blue surcoat with a white pegasi emblazoned on it. She was sent on this mission to provide bodyguard services for Mythalye. As an odd version of their race, Mendaceti favors the ideas of good over evil and that light pushes back the darkness that would seek to overwhelm those who are unable to protect themselves, even as she has to wear magic items to prevent the sunlight from burning her flesh. However, growing up on the overly paranoid moon colony, this paladin of Lurue also learned the value of protection that simple obfuscation can also provide. In her mind, a truth untold can be an efficient means of stopping evil in its tracks, and a lie which hurts noone can serve the greater good. It is belief which allows her to represent herself as a Knight of the Flying Hunt, and her steed, Applecider, to be a true pegasi, despite the fact that its simply an awakened horse with a saddle of the pegasi wings attached with a sweet tooth for apples. Mendaceti presents herself as travelling with Mythalye to protect the “young pegasi pony Forji which has taken to her”, and the fact that Mendaceti does truly love and serve Lurue makes this entirely believable. Since arriving in the city, however, Mendaceti has drawn the attention of the Roaringhorn family, specifically Javalar Roaringhorn who was visiting his cousins, as well as that of a Highcoin Lass, Belűndrae Brost, and her father, Bellondarr Brost, who have a werepegasi contact amongst the Knights of the Flying Hunt. The three of them, after attending a fęte at the Roaringhorn family villa, and during which Javalar was escorting the two Brosts back to Bliss Street, ran across Mendaceti as she was chasing what appeared to be another noble who had just left the party with sword drawn. The chase was long, leading into the sewers, and eventually even down to Skullport, with the nobleman seemingly using a hat of disguise to take on the identities of other individuals several times along the way. Javalar and the Brosts were unable to catch up to Mendaceti either, and eventually both the nobleman and Mendaceti were lost when a red, violet, and brassy feathered cathlyre, a valuable peacock like bird of the underdark, was spotted in the streets of Skullport and drew attention from several separate mobs of dark elves. All of them converged on the poor creature, but it wasn't seen who actually caught the creature. Some believe it was the worshippers of Eilistraee who escorted the bird from the scene and ultimately to safety.
"The Pegasi Pony of Mythalye" aka "Forji" aka Forjeri Bragborn ("ellefolk of Brag descent") – Forjeri Bragborn is an ellefolk of Brag Descent (see the 2nd edition Shadow Rift entry for Arak, Brag for general description information) who was primarily sent on this mission to serve by working in the sewers and other dark, hidden places of the undercity. However, whenever he is seen with Mythalye, he is usually in the form of a pegasi pony (thanks to a saddle of the pegasi wings that he wears that gives him wings) that is carrying things for her. She calls him “Forji” in these instances, and she is openly verbal with him, for after all what follower of a Lurue wouldn't have a young pegasi following them around “to be trained under their watchful eye”. When he arrived in the city, Forjerri joined the Cellarers' and Plumbers' Guild using a fake beard made from horsehair to appear to be a dwarf. Since then, he, Talstori (see below) and Prevaricati (see below) have made it their personal mission to use their access to documents from this guild to map out the sewers and track down nests of the Unseen throughout the city.
"Fibry, the talking ferret of Mythalye" aka "Bryanna" aka Fybryanna Muryannissi ("ellefolk of Muryan descent") - Standing at just five feet tall, with a wild, mane of red hair, Fybryanna Muryanissi poses as a "half-elf of moon elf descent", but in truth she is a hotheaded ellefolk of the subrace commonly nicknamed "the dancing men". As a result, Fybryanna spends the majority of her time at clandestine meetings "working the room" by wearing thigh high boots, a woolen kilt over a leather strap dress, a silken shirt worn over a color changing vest which matches her chosen kilt for the day. She is also a warrior with a penchant for blades, and she has numerous daggers both obvious and secreted upon her person, in addition to the twin scimitars that she keeps crossing her back. She is a favorite in any tavern that she is brought to, especially amongst the men folk, though she is as apt to dance with women as well. She loves to play at games such as darts and dagger tossing, and she uses these opportunities to gather information from the drunken louts that are attracted to her feminine nature. Fybryanna also has the ability to shapechange into a ferret for up to 3 hours per day, and she uses this ability often by going to the restroom, shapechanging, and then going off to spy on someone for a short while. Though not truly of elven descent, she is fey, and she poses as a practictioner of the elven art of the bladesinger (her exact build being up to the DM, but she favors evocation magics, and you may allow the Muryan to become bladesingers as well).
"Mr. Tyrtell, the talking turtle of Mythalye" aka Talstori Tyrtelle ("ellefolk of Portune descent") – Talstori Tyrtelle is a tiny, black-skinned figure with pure white eyes and mothlike wings in his natural form, as natural for his race as an ellefolk of Portune descent (see the 2nd edition Shadow Rift entry for Arak, Brag for general description information). However, whenever he's seen with Mythalye, he is almost assuredly in the form of a simple box turtle which she often sets on the table in front of her and feeds various things such as cabbage and carrots. Sometimes she allows him to “take a walk for some exercise”, placing him on the floor to move around freely while she discusses things with whomever she is meeting. She is overly protective of him, especially if small coins such as coppers are being tossed about, often noting that “Mr. Tyrtell is fragile, you must be careful with him”. Talstori's role with Mythalye is to be unobtrusive and yet watchful and listening, and he was sent by his superiors because they know him to be exceptionally patient. They also sent him because they knew his skill at potion making could prove valuable on the surface world for when magic must be used with discretion. However, Talstori prefers his role when he can assume his natural form and work on his alchemical infusions or use his crafting constuct to make a new contraption to help in the searching of the sewers and the marshes south of the city. Few within the city have seen him in this form, and the few times he has been seen, he made claims of being either a gloura or a gloaming, and few questioned him on it despite looking truly nothing like either such type of being. This is because even when he is in his natural form, he is usually inside a nimblewright construct that he had constructed for himself by a fellow ellefolk fir artificer on the moon. He is served by a tiny humonculous servant that appears to be in the form of a tiny turtle humanoid with 3 fingered hands that stands taller than himself, which often rides within this nimblewright as well and comes out to repair it as need be. Talstori himself is not interested in combat, but he is interested in uncovering the mystery of the Unseen, for he views those who threaten his people to be a serious issue. Thus, he is often brought into scenes after the fact for his keen observational skills to reconstruct puzzles, uncover leads, review findings, perform alchemical tests to determine facts, and generally make himself useful as a man of the magical sciences. He then has these things “brought back to his lab”, so that he and his humonculous servant can review them whilst his fellow ellefolk go back into the dangers of the field.
"Prevari" aka Prevaricati Lyesynvaen ("ellefolk of Sith Descent")- Prevaricati Lyesynvaen is an ellefolk of Sith Descent (see the 2nd edition Shadow Rift entry for Arak, Sith for general description information). He appears at most times to be a shadow of a roughly humanoid shape of a very slim and agile build with long hair. To most who see him, they instantly equate him to the shades of Netheril, and Prevaracati does nothing to dissuade them from this belief. In fact, it was the continual comparison and further news that there were shadowy fey named shadar-kai that drew Prevaracati off mission to scout out the society of the Shadovar. Expecting to find those who worshipped the Raven Queen like himself, he found these human-like shadar-kai to serve the Torilian goddess of darkness and secrets instead. In some ways, she appeared similar to the Raven Queen, though in others she seemed a more insane and perverted goddess, and he found these shadar-kai of the netherese to be of an unworthy nature in his own personal estimation.
Nor was this the only time Prevaricati has gone off mission in order explore the cultures of the “surface world”, though in truth, perhaps it should be said “beneath the surface world”, for on another mission, Prevaricati also heard of the worship of a death goddess named Kiaransalee amongst some drow, and he traveled to the Acropolis of Thanatos in the dark elven city of V'elddrinnsshar beneath the Galena mountains. There he found numerous twisted dark elven priestesses, as well as numerous hags of various types, including both night and bheur hags and even sea hags in the lake. In this instance, he barely escaped the cavern with his life, praise be to the Raven Queen, though it wasn't without profit, for he had acquired a petrified object of magic which some called “the Eye of Cegilune”. So far, despite his studying of this item, he has been unable to delve any of its secrets, though one night when he left it on the nightstand he awoke due to horrible dreams of a bloody nature which he was unable to recall afterwards. Ever since then, he has locked the item away in a lead box whose interior consists of bloodstone bars, and he had no further nightmares.
But Prevaricati's mission is the same as that of his fellow ellefolk, and so he is back in Waterdeep searching for the Unseen operatives who endanger his homeland. While not driven by the values of good or evil, he does value the ideals of law, or at least the laws of his homeland, which dictate that secrecy about their lives must be kept from the surface worlders who outnumber them significantly. Thus, Prevaricati has set himself as a seeker in the underworld of Waterdeep, learning secrets about criminal organizations and using lies to turn them against one another. Prevaricati's interests extend into arcane magics of shadows, necromancy, and disinformation. As a result, he has setup a private lab which even his fellow ellefolk know little about, wherein he can store dead bodies of those slain for his own experimentation. In doing so, he seeks to uncover the secrets that the dead take with them to the grave, in hopes that they can perhaps reveal the next key in the mystery that is the Unseen's vile organization . |

I once had a strange idea that I for some reason decided to run with: A dwarf named Lightning Badmouth. I pictured him wearing a 1920s leather aviator helmet, and having stylized lightning bolt tattoos running from his forehead, over his eyes, and down to his cheeks.
I put way too much effort into trying to make that whole idea work, before eventually realizing it was, start to finish, a lost cause. |

You had me at turquoise codpiece.
If you don't mind me adding some additions.... he is to be found in Anchorome at this time. It seems that during the Sundering, he had set forth from Laerakond aboard a tiny ship for a short 3 hour tour with his partner, Skipper O'hattinhand, and some travellers. Their ship was run aground off the western coast of a returning anchorome on an island inhabited by peaceful natives of Azuposi and Metahel descent who possessed a turquoise mine. They have no knowledge of this land and are too afraid to launch themselves blindly on an ocean voyage. However, they have found what appear to be underground tunnels that seem to travel eastward beneath the ocean floor. |

Various RPGs had Porky (a Tellarite bartender), Mr Spork (a Vulcan), Capt Combover (Twilight 2000), and Phil O'Dendron (Gamma World) |
