I found my book on the Realms when I unpacked this year and there's bits of information on the different places but it's very generic.
My real question is more about certain times and places and how they tie in with the different art styles. I like a great deal of the 80's art and exciting characters that look almost like something from a Meatloaf cover but I also like some of the 90's art and darker mood. Some of the 90's look was kind of getting away from fantasy though. I'm not sure if I like much of the newer art. I'd be happy to see some artists' pages if you have them though. |

I do like Larry Elmore, I just think he is the definitive artist for Krynn and it's basically a land of power ballads and hair metal. Very good for what it is, but a little too fantastic for the Realms, which seem more grounded to me. I love both but they are very different things in my mind. |

I was not familiar with this artist, but I just looked him up... I see he's also done some stuff for Star Wars, Numenara, and The Strange. That's a pretty good list of stuff, there.
I do like his stuff, though Larry Elmore will always be my favorite. |

Matt Stawicki is fantastic, and although I tend to like more the classics like Elmore and Caldwell, I like Lockwood's Drizzt and Companions of the Hall more than any previous rendition. |

I really like the art Matt Stawicki did for the Dragonlance rereleased and I actually think it fits better with the realms too. It’s fantastic but serious at the same time. I think he knows just how much should go into an image to balance it between fantastic and believable. I’m not finding him doing Realms work though.
I also sympathize with people being turned off by bad art choices. When I finally got old enough to buy D&D stuff it was when all the product had a very off point style to it. Half the artists seem to get things right with a darker style, while the rest seemed to have one foot in the pop culture. |

I came to really associate the wonderful art of Ned Dameron and Valerie Valusek with the Realms. Unfortunately, I don't believe either have artist pages like you can find for those Wooly mentioned, making it difficult to keep up with them. Their art especially in the Volo's Guides, deity books, and class books in 2e very much became what I think of as the Realms looking like.

Part of the reason I stopped reading Realms novels, during the waning days of the 3E era, was because of the artwork.
Yeah, I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, and all that... But for me, the cover art is usually what catches my eye, and makes me want to check out the back cover blurb. Some of the art that WotC was using at the time actively made me not want to look at the books.
We went from the beautiful art of Elmore, Easley, Caldwell, and Parkinson to something that my 8 year old son could have done.
And at least one of the books that I did read -- I never figured out if the cover art was inspired by the book, or was an actual scene, or just a case of "hey, this looks like something that might happen in this book, let's run with it." |

Search for "D&D" or "RPG" on deviantart. Numerous artists display their work, many will take commission to produce custom pieces. While not all of the art has quality or style which appeals to everyone, much of it is still quite excellent. |
