According to Volo's guide there are academies that hobgoblins are sent to if they posses a talent for arcane magic. In all my years of dealing with the Realms I have never heard of such a thing. Can anyone remember any mention of this in past products?

It seems like a good idea because I really am starting to love Hobgoblins the more they are fleshed out, but what I don't like is this sudden injection of Realms lore that never existed before. I could understand if this was a new thing, but from what I've read, it sounds like it's always been.

Anyone have any knowledge on this?

I'm going to point out alot of stuff in VGTM is for generic D&D in 5e and not everything applies to FR, although its bot clear what does and doesn't.

I love Hobgoblin spell-casters, especially of the Sorcerer variety. Learned spell-casters, in my estimation, would exist, but just not as common.

On the the other hand, I've swapped-out the Tuigan in the Hordelands for Hobgoblins. Not canon, of course, but far more creative than 'Realms Mongols'.

One of these days I should get back to my own Hobgoblin lore - The Drummers. I have it where Hob-culture is basically 'stolen bits' from other cultures they encounter, which isn't such a bad way of doing things. They see something they like and they copy it. A little more sophisticated than what the other goblinoids are doing.

I'm not sure how I'd fit 'academies' into all that. Maybe one central one somewhere - I just can't picture them all over Faerūn.

To underscore GK's comment: this Volo's Guide product is non-canon, but equally important, Volo himself is an "unreliable narrator" notoriously prone to exaggeration, elaboration, and fabrication of truths and facts he himself doesn't always fully understand. I could easily imagine a chance encounter between Volo and a hobgoblin with a hobby escalating into half-drunken fanciful tales of a hobgoblin hogwarts.

Volo's Guide to Monsters isn't an FR product IMO, so take it with a pinch of salt re what is and what isn't in the Realms.
