Hail!

I came across a source on the net somewhere that said that Torm keeps the detals of his mortal existence a mystery. Could this be true? I mean, here you have a mortal who achieved godhood through virtue of his service, and all details regarding that service is somekinda BIG secret? Why would THAT be, eh?

So, is it true? Does anyone know anything about Torm's mortal existence? Will anyone ever know anything? Was his mortal life really all virtuous? Or does he really serve some god of lies or another; which would explain why his virtuous mortal existence is kept a secret?

The impression I got from the Faiths and Avatars tale about how they obtained power from Jergal was that those were their names.

They could always be keeping their secrets to protect descendents of their families. Could make for an interesting twist for a pc to have been descended from someone who ascended to godhood.

It could also be to protect their true names.

And besides that, if he told everyone of his past and where his mortal residence was, it'd ruin the "fun" for those of his followers who want to go searching for it.... They'd have nothing to do otherwise..... as if smiting evil wasn't something more worthwhile.....

Nah.... He's much too virtuous to make any sort of political officer.....

And he's just like the Red Knight who keeps her mortal name secret. And it's probably stuff like what Cyric can pull on Mystra by knowing her real name and doing nasty stuff to her with that knowledge. And I see him as someone who lets his present deeds speak louder than anything regarding his past life. Why live in the past?, some would say....

Torm's home plane is no longer the Material (although until relatively recently, it was). In those days, the True God indeed went about, fighting evil and great monsters, though usually (it would seem) in a manner that got rid of the threat, rather than bringing glory to the deity. He still does so frequently, according to Faiths & Avatars, in avatar form. Since he is no longer living on the Material Plane, and is no longer a demigod, I'm not sure how well the Heracles model fits, but if one were to alter the concept from a powerful half-god seeking glory and combat to a mortal who became a god and continues to wander about the Realms seeking out the evils he destroyed in life, that's certainly an accurate perception of the overall idea of Torm's combats after ascending to godhood.

Hail!

Thanks for the detailed response!

I have this idea in my mind of Torm being something of a Hercules ... a demi-god who walks the mortal realms righting wrong and defeating monstrous evils. Is this an accurate perception? His plane of residence is the Prime Material isn't it? And if so, are there any tales of his exploits? Will there ever be?

Frith!

Torm keeps the details of his mortal life secret, but his reasons for doing so are unknown. The kingdom he served has long since fallen, however, so mortal records of Torm's existence won't really be available.

As for the secrecy, I doubt very highly that the god has anything to be ashamed of. It is known that he was a paladin in the region known as the Border Kingdoms shrtly after the fall of Netheril in -329DR. His patron was likely either Ilmater or Anachtyr (a southern god of Justice who was later absorbed by Tyr); Tyr himself did not arrive in Faerūn until -247DR, and it's entirely likely that Torm was already well on his way to godhood. Torm himself might feel that knowledge of his history might give those with the wrong intentions some power over him, that this information might lead some followers down the wrong path, or simply that the details of his mortal life are unimportant.
