I've been quite enamoured lately with re-visiting the most excellent Perilous Gateways Archive over at the archived WotC F.R. Archives.
Located here = http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archfr/pg
What I'd like to know is, are there any more Candlekeep scrolls, obscure PDF files, Ed/THO responses, F.R. web sites or other online material that specifically documents the detailed history, mapping and/or mechanics of Portals in the F.R.?
My F.R. gaming group and I all play D&D 3.5 in the Realms. And we've all become very interested in cataloguing the vast Torilian network of Magic Portals. A number of 3.5 sourcebooks listed helping information on Portal Magic in general. Those being MotP & PlHB ... the Spell Compendium ... and of course, the FRCS, Underdark, CoV & Expedition to Undermountain. The FRCS though, was the first rulebook for us to emphasize the game mechanics and importance of Magic Portals for all of us.
Using the Search facility here at CK, I definitely found a lot of mentions of Magic Portals in Toril ... but not a lot of write-ups or compiled essays of the maps, networks and scholarly research of them.
So that's why I'm coming to all of you. :-) Also, any general discussion and insight on F.R. portals is welcome as well. Whether it's 1E, 2E, 3.5, 4E or Next.
Thank you so much! |

Posted - 22 Sep 2014 : 08:45:25 I just found the portal network in Azirrhat in the Perilous Gateways articles and it got me to thinking about various bits of lore and the transition from Survivor States of Netheril to the Bedine.
Portals are awesome, and when i finally finish cataloguing all the lore from 2nd and 3rd edition sourcebooks im going to sort through all these portals because i bet there are a few hidden gems we could use for excellent realmslore. |

You are, of course, referring to scribe Dargoth's grand compilation scroll of portal lore, I believe. |

I've always thought that the best snapshot of portals/gates in the Realms is in the last couple of pages of "Secrets of the Magister". There are a few more snippets scattered through the sources, dating back to Ed's first Pages From the Mages article to his recent Ed Greenwood Presents Elminster's Forgotten Realms.
It's a project I'll get back to in a year or so I reckon.
