So I play 3rd edition and as of 3rd there is this surviving civilization of Imaskarans trickling up from the lowest depths of the Underdark.

My question is, how do the few surviving ancient Imaskarans view these descendants of their empire? Is it different for those who've accepted Lichdom from those who;ve just survived via "life extending magics"?

How do the descendants view their surviving ancestors?

There have been 2 other "ancient Imaskari" within modern times. The first being Thayd for helping to free Thay from religious shackling of magical experimentation (and I hold him to be a vestige / spirit ala tome of magic / secrets of pact magic). The other is the aforementioned Madryoch. Granted, neither interacted with the Deep Imaskari, so we don't know what their reaction would have been. I suspect Madryoch might have at least understood them (having spent so much time in the shadowfell). I suspect Thayd would have found them weaklings.

From -8350 entry for Ancient Imaskar

The elite mages of Imaskar—foremost among them the archwizards Madryoch and Hilather—also rose to power during this period.

168 DR Year of Scattered Stars
A wizard of unknown ancestry calling himself Halaster Blackcloak [307], later identified as the Raurinese wizard Hilather [150, 1026], builds a tower and fortified ramparts in the middle of the Deepwater Plateau, to the north and west of the burgeoning farms along the harbor shore in Waterdeep. He begins exploration of the Underhalls of the Melairkyn and claims the delvings
for himself.

where did you get that Halaster was Imaskari? Has that been stated in a novel or new supplement somewhere? His earliest appearance I'm aware of was thousands of years after Imaskar's fall. That would be a major character change in my mind.

As sfdragon states, they'd probably view them with disdain. After all, the Deep Imaskari forfeited their right to sunshine and the beauty of the surface world to go live in a hole in the ground. Granted, it may be a nice hole, but its still a hole. The ones that came up later might garner a little more respect, but their mastery of magic is far from that of the Imaskari.

It should also be noted that the Imaskari dealt with a lot of extraplanar entities (such as devils).

Imaskar's specialty is portal magic, to some extent it still is.

ancient imaskari would view their descendants as mere children in the art and thus with content and would still look down on them.
