To start off with I'd like to say that I missed this community (along with a few others I was part of such as The Piazza)and am glad to be back. For those of you who remember my name, I was the lunatic who just couldn't seem to let Maztica go even after all the poundings it took. I had a sickness and resultant death in my family that sucked the will to write and read out of me, but I feel truly ready to come back. I'm glad to see so many familiar names still here!

With that being said, of course my first post has to be about 5e realms and hope for Maztica! Does anyone think the Sundering could bring it back? Would it fit back in the western reaches of Toril again? Why not right?

I wrote much of my thoughts on this on this post in The Piazza, but I would like to clarify here.

A "Returned Maztica" with 100+ years of exile could fix virtually all the problems people had with the original setting while keeping all that was great.

Here are "problems" and my proposed solutions...

1. To close to RW History: Well, I don't want to change what has happened in the past, but after a century, perhaps the Amnians and other mainland Faerunians have assimilated into the native cultures? After so long without a connection to home and with a relatively small percentage of the population to begin with, perhaps all that remains is the occasional light skinned Maztican...

2. Underpowered magic: Imagine if all of Maztica had been transported to Abeir and over the century no connection to their gods had caused the necessity of further development of pluma and hishna magic. Perhaps the harsh new world and its primordials inherently increased the strength of Maztican magic?

These are just some thoughts...

Anyway, to celebrate coming back, I managed to finish up a netbook I began long ago. I had wanted to include so much more, but I feel too rusty to go headlong back into it. It just seemed a shame that all the artists that donated their work, and MalariaMoons great contributions never got to see the light of day.

Enjoy this treatise on the scorpionfolk of Maztica...

There is also a thread about Claw and Sting at the Maztica forum at The Piazza, if anyone is interested.

I like that placement, it gets rid of the huge "Anchorome" landmasss that was never developed. I had not noticed that there were two somewhat discrepancies in the 4th ed FRCG(one stating it was replacing Maztica and the other stating it was off the coast of Evermeet).

It is a shame that the 4e Team did not just use Anchorome as Returned Abeir (instead of swapping it with Laerakond) and put the 4e monsters there.

The could have added new 4e stuff, without the need for a timejump. That would have made it a lot easier for people to retain the sub-settings.

Basically, the top part of Anchorome, which never had any real detailing is replaced by Laerakond (Returned Abeir). I'm fine with that, it gives us an already detailed area to fill in an area of the world that was just dead space. After all, while Returned Abeir wasn't necessarily my cup of tea, it wasn't bad and I'm sure some folks enjoyed it... why lose it for dead space. Yet it still leaves places like Aurune, Osse, Numibia, and Katashaka, etc... for people to develop (if they'll ever see development). NOTE: in the aforementioned, I'm fulling accepting the names provided by I believe Handsome Rob on his wonderful overview map of all of Toril pre-spellplague. I'm not sure where he got them, but I'm sure it was probably from some ask Ed questions in the past.

Huh odd. Always though Anchorome/Maztica was further north than that map shows. Or is that a post-Spellplague explanation? The continents shifted down and Returned Abeir stays?

You can easily keep both Maztica and Laerakond (Returned Abeir) by positioning the later north of Maztica proper. This also neatly ties to published lore that says that Returned Abeir appeared off the coast of Evermeet [FRCG p.132]

Here is a map I created that shows the placement:

This is utterly awesome, and will be used for my 5e campaign regardless of canon.

a returned Maztica has a lot of story possibilities.

I have worked a really long time trying to figure out just how Maztica could fit back on Toril. I am trying to write my own Sundering-esque novellete and am documenting the process here at the Piazza. It uses references to the netbooks I have in my sig, but can be understood without them. I don't know really, its just my take on what might be happening...

I think the end of the story will leave exactly where Maztica returns up to the reader, but in my own personal campaign, it will just be placed further West of Laerakond in the Trackless Sea. I actually don't want too many Faerunians spoiling the Aztec/Maya fantasy culture I visualize Maztica as, so the further away it is, the better.

One thing to consider though is that Returned Abeir is noted on pg 87 of the 4th edition FR campaign setting as "The greatest portion of the returning world, however, replaced Maztica, the continent west of Faerūn. Now, a savage land breathes beneath a steely sky across the Trackless Sea: Returned Abeir."

So, at first glance one thinks that for Maztica to return, then returned Abeir must go away. I however think that one COULD do a very interesting twist on things that would catch everyone by surprise. You'll note that the map of Returned Abeir in the FR campaign setting has a mileage index which roughly makes Returned Abeir and Maztica the same size and shape (minus Anchorome and the little add on leg on the left bottom side of Maztica). HOWEVER, you'll also note that the Returned Abeir map doesn't point out North and South....... so what if the map of Returned Abeir is upside down? Also, what if Returned Abeir is actually slightly southwest of where Maztica was by about 240 miles or so? This would actually interlock the two continents rather nicely (i.e. the n-shaped Maztica would fit in with a u-shaped Returned Abeir). This could lead to some interesting consequences if "Returned Abeir" is actually an original piece of Toril just as Maztica is (i.e. at some point a portion of "Maztica" transferred to Abeir long ago). Essentially, Maztica returns after having been in Abeir for 100 years and remerges with Returned abeir.

If they didn't want to flip Returned Abeir, they could also slightly displace it directly to the west/southwest/ or northwest and achieve a similar end. In fact, if the northeast corner of returned abeir were to snug its way into Lopango, it could serve as an expansion and fit it in with Katashaka a bit as well.

I like the idea of a Returned Maztixca and all the interesting changes that could turn up from coming back from Abeir...

You might enjoy some of the conversations I've had over the past few years for ways for it to come back and be improved.
