Posted - 04 Jun 2014 : 23:09:36 Hi all. For the last two years I've been running a 2e Realms play by post game over on rpol.net. It's been going really well; unfortunately, most of the other games I've been involved with have closed down and I'm in the mood for more 2e Realms fun. So since my first game with a bunch of CK scribes has gone so well, I thought I'd check here and see if there was interest in a second.
Some details: * The game will be held over at rpol.net, since it's a relatively good site for managing games and I'm familiar with it. Dice rolls will be handled through Invisible Castle, as I don't like rpol's dice roller. Here's a link to my current game; if you're curious, feel free to stop on by and see what an rpol game looks like: http://www.rpol.net/game.cgi?gi=52011 * I'd like to have five players, maybe six. People should be able to post multiple times per week (I'd like every day, but then again, life gets in the way so I don't insist. But it needs to be more than once a week). * ruleset will be 2e. It's pretty much open basket; if it was printed, I'm probably allowing it (ie: kits, characters from other settings). I have most if not all 2e books, so can help find things you might not have. I'm also fairly open to Dragon stuff, so if you have something you'd like to bring in, let me know and we can talk. I respond best to well-thought-out explanations. * psionics will be the Complete Handbook variety, with additional powers from Dark Sun (ie: The Will and the Way). * all of the specialty priests from the Godbook Trio are allowed; they advance using either cleric or druid XP tables at the players' choice. * no racial level caps, though class restrictions will be enforced. * starting level, like the things below, is flexible, though probably is going to be 5 or below.
Where I'd like some input is in what sort of campaign people would be interested in. There are some things I find interesting (ie: subsea adventuring in Seros) but other don't. Timeframe would likely be somewhere in the 1360's, but when exactly, and where, and doing what, are all open for debate. Would like you fighting Zhents in the Dales, running merchant caravans through the Underdark, spelunking in Undermountain, swimming as the fishes under the sea, etc.
My private messages mailbox is mostly full, so if you're interested, respond here. I don't necessarily need an immediate character stub, though if you have a kind of character you like to play, that's fine to include. Right now I'm just judging interest, and what people would like to play. |

Posted - 26 Jun 2014 : 16:19:34 Right. As long as you've got a bit of time each day (or every other day) to post, you've got enough time for the game. So if you'd like to join, you're welcome to.
And if you join and it later turns out to be too much of a commitment, just let me know and you can drop out. No hard feelings. |

Posted - 26 Jun 2014 : 15:40:17 Welcome Masked Mage. We're still a bit away from starting. No need to worry about time commitment as much as with a live or chat game. For the most part one can use those odd minutes between daily activities to keep up with the game. Any game activity that require more time can be saved for a period when one has more free time. The trade off is the game moves at a slower pace, but I find it a bit relaxing (not having to commit hour long blocks each week) and still adequate to make notable progress. |

Posted - 26 Jun 2014 : 02:50:42 I'd throw my hat in too, but my availability is limited. Sounds good though Hoondatha.PS (loved the magnificent seven flashback, thanks for that) |

Posted - 24 Jun 2014 : 10:20:22 Thanks! It worked perfectly and I have posted the story and description of my character (Allondr). |

Posted - 23 Jun 2014 : 22:11:39 PN: I've added you to the game, so if you go to the link (http://www.rpol.net/game.cgi?gi=60275) you should be able to see the two currently-existing threads, as well as post. Can you please double check and let me know if you're still having problems? |

Posted - 23 Jun 2014 : 21:47:21 Strange, the link is just a few posts above and it should let you in. I've never seen rpol have trouble outside of going down for maintenance. |

Posted - 23 Jun 2014 : 21:03:33 Hi everyone, I created an account at rpol, but have been unable to post any message in the threads or to request the addition of my character. His stats, obtained in Invisible Castle, are found here: http://invisiblecastle.com/stats/view/35967/ |

Posted - 22 Jun 2014 : 23:30:50 Hi all. We're still setting things up, so if there are others who want to jump in (or people who have expressed interest who are still thinking), there's still time. Come on over to rpol, and say hi! |

Posted - 18 Jun 2014 : 02:38:43 I'm playing a half-elven fighter/thief/wizard. |
Dark Wizard |
Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 23:55:02 Looks like that swashbuckler is a possibility. Multi-classing may be a stretch...
Now to pick a race. Hmm... wonder how a dwarf combo works with this.
How's our race/class/characters shaping up otherwise? |

Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 17:24:38 I forgot to say: you'll need to create an account and request to join the game. If you have a character name in mind, let me know and I'll add that character, otherwise I can just add you screenname as your temp character. It's one of rpol's quirks that you have to get added attached to a character, you can't just get added as a player. |

Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 17:05:59 I think we're got enough interested people, and a good enough sense of the game, for me to go ahead and create it over on rpol. I'm pasting the link below; please everyone move over to rpol to ask further questions. I've got both a general out of character thread up, as well and a CharGen thread that has a lot of the nitty-gritty specifics people were asking about.

Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 14:03:50 I will definitely be a human. I will pick my class after everyone else and fill in whatever gap the party has. Let us know what starting level and how to do stats. |

Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 13:30:47 Another question, How do you want stats rolled/bought? |

Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 11:13:56 Question for the DM: Since it looks like we're going with a merchant group are we all going to be in business together? Representing a merchant consortium? Also, if we're all merchants how much starting wealth do we have access to and how is our independant income going to be determined? I know GURPS does this sort of lateral build through a point-buy system and Birthright has a system for it as well. Come to think of it, didn't one of the Zakhara tomes have a merchant-prince kit? Just trying to wrap my brain around how some of this will work. Cheers. |

Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 04:59:59 There are some particulars about 2E and older editions in general that have trouble porting over to the later games. The specific flavor embodied in those mechanics is thus lost in translation over the editions. I'm hoping the slimmed down version of 5E can bring a lot of it back, at least make it easier to convert older material to the new game.

Posted - 17 Jun 2014 : 00:40:01 I don't particularly like multiclassing under 3e so whenever I get a chance to play a 2e game I almost always multiclass (b/c 2e is better in that regard). Problem is spreading yourself too thin in regards to your capabilities under 2e (where the ability scores are weaker as compared to 3e). I would really prefer not to add the fighter to the mix but it is needed. Perhaps I will go with Ftr/Rog/Wiz instead. I really want to play a priest though as 2e priests are MUCH better than the 3e prestige class versions. |
Dark Wizard |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 23:59:38 Likewise, seeing as we've a couple of magic-users on board, I'm leaning towards the fighter, fighter/thief, fighter/bard(?) side. |

Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 22:45:27 Well, online games are slow slow slow...and getting bogged down in the nuances of prejudice would be problematic methinks. I'll go with a standard half-elf. If this were a standard tabletop game the roleplay opportunities with Apex's character would have been great. The idea was for the character to be the product of a rape. His mother would have been taken in by a kindly priest of Valkur, hence his leaning toward the priesthood. In the process of learning magic as well, he discovers an affinity (perhaps because of his religious calling) for water and/or air magic
Anyway, we seem to be leaning rather heavily toward wizards and priests so I may add fighter to the mix (Clr/Ftr/Wiz) just to expand our abilities but he can't be a tank with being unable to cast in armor. The background can be nearly identical but I will just make his mother a wizard and his father a priest and go from there. He will be from Athkatla and the temple will be the Schooner of the Seas (2e Powers and Pantheons, p74). I don't know how I will tie him in to the others yet (perhaps it can be done in-game) but at some point he must find the need to join the merchant ship. Perhaps as a simple ship-mage that grows into true friendship? |
Hoondatha |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 21:10:01 Yeah. I'm not going to flat out say no to the half-drow right now, I'm willing to see the background and your ideas of how he/she joined the group, but it's probably going to be a lot easier if you go with a normal half-elf. Because I'm not going to pull the prejudice punches for a half-drow in the south. |
Apex |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 21:03:34 My character was going to have an enmity towards drow anyways. I prefer my drow in the Gygax tradition (ie evil and hated). |
paladinnicolas |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 20:37:28 I would like to play a human priest of Ilmater hailing from Tethyr, who believes among others that fair trade can help to make groups closer, even if at conflict, and thus alleviate suffering. |
Hoondatha |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 16:47:29 A half-drow? You do realize that unless the entire group is sailing out of Dambrath (which would be an option if you wanted to go the pirate route), you're going to get lynched in every port you might set foot in. |
The Arcanamach |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 16:36:30 I'm designing a half-drow water elementalist/priest of Valkur. If we go with a non-shipborne group I'll put something else together. |

Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 16:34:03 No problem, the forum's been spotty for everyone.
Let's see what we have so far for character ideas:
Apex: Illusionist or specialty priest (yes, F&A is allowed) Arcanamach: Half-elf wizard/priest (again, possibly specialized) Dark Wizard: A whole bunch of ideas TBeholder: ?? Paladinnicolas: ?? (Priest of Tyr if campaign is Tethyr-based)
A couple of notes: * Smokepowder does exist, but it's mostly confined to Realmspace and the rest of Spelljammer. It's not available at character generation, but you can go looking for it later if you like. * For those of you looking at mutli-class characters, please make sure that the combination is actually allowed (ie: some specialty priests can't mutliclass, some can multiclass in ways their race normally can't). I have all three Godbooks, if you need reference help. |
Apex |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 14:58:30 Sorry for the lack of replies, but the forum wouldn't load for me all last week. I think I would likely play either an illusionist or a specialty priest if faiths and avatars is being used. |
Dark Wizard |
Posted - 16 Jun 2014 : 03:19:10 I have Pirates of the Fallen Stars and maybe Sea of Fallen Stars. Never have been able to land myself a copy Of Ships and the Sea, but can grab a PDF copy via DTRPG if it's available there. Figure they're more resources for the DM anyway.
If this is headed in the seagoing campaign, perhaps I can give the swashbuckler concept another go. Or the buccaneer, along similar lines.
One character type I've always wanted to play was the gnome artificer (if smokepowder weapons are allowed and smokepowder is obtainable). Then again, firearms might be too testy to be worth the effort at the pace of a PbP.
An appropriate kit I saw while browsing the books is the halfling cartographer kit, who will serve as the ship's navigator and chart-keeper.
I've rarely played a specialty priest and would like to try out more of them. I'm also partial to an elementalist wizard, perhaps a genasi (to borrow from the 3E Realms). Also, I feel the Complete Barbarian might hold some interesting options I'd be willing to try. |
Hoondatha |
Posted - 15 Jun 2014 : 19:50:47 Of Ships and the Sea is the other major 2e sea-related work. I have all three, though I haven't tried running some of the ship rules in a long time. It could be seriously fun, though.
Looks like we're leaning more toward the ship based idea.
And I'm perfectly fine with both specializations and kits. I try to stay away from more Player's Option stuff (so no custom character building or the weirder wizard specializations like geometry), but all of the Complete books, Tome of Magic, and the Godbook Trio for specialty priests are all allowed. |
The Arcanamach |
Posted - 15 Jun 2014 : 10:01:31 Well, I have ideas for a PC for both a land-based and sea campaign. I'm thinking a half-elven wizard-priest for the shipborne idea, especially if allowed to specialize (I'm thinking air or water elementalist and a priest of one of the deities associated with the sea [Selune, Valkur, or Umberlee]).
Land-based depends on where I want the character from. Either a multiclassed fighter/thief or, if from Amn, a fighter/thief/mage (because I like the idea of a mage from wizard-hating Amn). |
