Myth Drannor is a classic one, but are there any other noteworthy ones scattered on FR's maps? |

Posted - 26 Mar 2014 : 19:06:11 Skullport is actually a very interesting example, but I was thinking more of decrepid stonework landscapes where predatory monsters lair. I need to brush up on my lore of this place anyways, loved the scenes in Kemps novels that were in Skullport.
Wonder if Veldorn is given more detail in sources beyond campaign guides? It must be hard to make sense of a nation state run by beasts and fiends.
Occupied ruins are legion in the Raumathari and Narfellian areas it seems from the desciptions of Rasheman:
Dun Tharos is/was the former capital of Narfell and is/was tended by a netyarch druid and his plant and animal allies.
The summit of mount Nar in Thay used to house a priest-held narfellian fortress that controlled the weather, that's ruined aswell and a hassle to resetlle because of the haywire weather magics subzero temperatures (what an atmosheric dungeon run this could make!)
I remember from the novel Bloodwalk that a secert to transformation of a mortal into a demon could be found in one of the ruins of Narfell. Dont know which one though...

Posted - 26 Mar 2014 : 16:50:05 There's still a bit on the Wizards site (here) regarding the Wailing Dwarf.
I sometimes think of Delhumide or the ruins in the Methwood/Chondalwood because of my geographical bias, but the other suggestions in this thread are great. |

Very good memory, Mike. But I think the reference to the Wailing Dwarf was written in books like "Savage Frontier" and in "The North" boxed set. It probably came from Dragon, or was detailed in an article later. Or was it the House of Stone?
EDIT: I mixed them up, the Wailing Dwarf was built over a dwarven city in Amn (and is mentioned in the "Lands of Intrigue" boxed set), and the House of Stone is simply a keep near the Ardeep Forest, close to Waterdeep. |

Posted - 26 Mar 2014 : 15:00:16 Gauntlgrym, Shoonach, the entire nation of Veldorn, Myth Drannor, Hellgate Keep, Vehlarr, any ancient Netherese settlement in Anauroch, Dolblunde (although the number of monsters in there are far fewer), almost every city in deep shanatar
I wonder could you class Skullport in this category (3e), admittedly it isnt ruined but it is pretty ramshackle in most places, and its full of monsters of all kinds.

Posted - 26 Mar 2014 : 14:48:13 One that I can think of, are the ruins of Zhentile Keep. Although depending on the level of your adventurers, I think low level would be a no-no for them to look into. There was also another ruined city: The Wailing Dwarf. If I remember, this was in a Dragon Magazine...I think. Hope this helps you out. |

Posted - 26 Mar 2014 : 14:44:44 A ruined city with monsters? I think there is one in Maztica and another in the Lands of Intrigue, a legacy of the Shoon empire. Hellgate Keep, maybe? The rest I remember are lesser-scale ruins, like the Dungeon of Death and Undermountain (this last one maybe the size of a city). |
