I'd actually like to talk about it, I know a few things but never got my hands on A WHOLE lot of knowledge about the city. I find it ULTIMATELY fascinating, and highly interesting. If anyone is willing to input some lore, or talk about why they like it I'm all ears.

I realize one of the lords was Elminster at a time as well as Khelben, but I'd like to learn more of this place. Share knowledge of the city of Splendors!

Ha, nice to see that at least some of the more important people made it through the Spellplague

Now if I could just remember where I put that book...

There is a dedicated lore scroll for nothing but added info from other sages to the ever growing library on Waterdeep. I have created with my fellow sages in mind, much appreciated!

Now if you don't know Kirath, he was a magic user who's bones you find in the Mind Flayer level of the game. You can have him resurrected and he will join the party.

I so love Waterdeep!

I drew inspriation from the same thing when I designed an adventure to go with "I, Tyrant." They players were not the first heroes Piergeiron sent to investigate the Beholder island. At the bottom of one of the beholder lairs was the player character of a long-missing player, turned to stone. The players revived him and he joined the party.

I'm sure there have been plenty of requests for Waterdeep lore, but I don't know if there exists a dedicated Waterdeep scroll (i.e an equivalent to the Looking For All Info About Cormyr scroll).

Were I you, I'd go right ahead and start one, either on the Running the Realms shelf or perhaps on the Sage of Realmslore shelf.

I can't tell you how many of my games began in the "Yawning Portal".

My old notes are long gone, but I remember doing a lot of extensive work on the "Watch Wizards". I went to great lengths to flesh them out more.

Some random bits of lore, from my collection drawn from various Eye on the Realms articles in Dragon and Dungeon magazines (ezine versions).

Lady Eagleshield Revel
A revel held to honor Lady Embrelle Eagleshield in Waterdeep at Highroost, once very four years, on the sixth night of Flamerule.

Highroost
The home of the Eagleshield noble family in Waterdeep.

The Laughing Lass
A brothel on Ship street. Dungeon 184

The Foaming Tankard
A brew-tavern. Converted into The Foamy Smile festhall.
Dungeon 184

Ten Trolls Fallen
A tavern in Trades Ward. Has named rooms such as the Brazen Doors room.

Trades Ward
Inn of the Dripping Dagger
Front door sometimes speaks out loud. The inn is sometimes haunted.

Dock Ward
Haldark's Shiphaven Shop
On Sternpost Street.

Jhannastra House
Turned into a fortress of sorts after being broken into. Three ground floor shops occupy the space beneath her living quarters.

Castle Ward
Home of Maruttur "Mutter" Thalekin
Seller of maps, charts and books, knows much of the last century of seafaring activity in Waterdeep vicinity; doesn't do Skullport or Seacaves.

Castle Ward
Home of Saerpryn "Old Coldeyes" Thulomhreigh
Moneylender on Rainrun Street

Trades Ward
Ravenwyndar Representations
Factors/trade agents; of Blackmul Street

Mrayvren's Superior Castings
Given to four younger sons so that Mrayvren's Bountiful Rest could be opened.

North Ward
(name?)
Ilzantul Street, near Delzorin Street.
Called the Bountiful by locals. Has a room called the Gryphonshar.

Waterdeep
Mrayvren's Bountiful Rest
Feature: the Gryphonsar room (additional from Ed):
“Gryphonshar” was the name of a wealthy, successful, ethical, and much-loved Waterdhavian merchant who was a sometime sponsor, patron, and eventually business partner of Haeldrar Mrayvren. Andremon Gryphonsar died in the autumn of 1454 DR, but is remembered with fond nostalgia by many traders, and several rooms and features around Waterdeep have been named for him (all since his death).

Sea Ward
Ohmtalakar's Fine Gems
Located on the second floor of the first west-side Sul Street building north of Chanszobur's Manywares.

Sea Ward
Chanszobur's Manywares
On NW corner of Sul and Vondil Streets. Glittering and highly regarded store; favorite of nobles; expensive but superior merchandise.

(additional from Ed:)

Run by Rhavilra Gryphonshar, whose teams clean many lodgings and polish many boots for laboring and shopkeeping Waterdhavians

Highroost
The home of the Eagleshield noble family in Waterdeep.

hmmmm. I do not remember Elminster being a lord there but it has been awhile since I read the older sourcebooks.

I believe one of the recent Elminster books had Storm recalling a time when she and Elminster were Lords of Waterdeep. I can't recall off hand which one or what the exact circumstances of the conversation were though.

This has been nagging at me all week, so I went for a dig in my notes.

The reference can be found on page 287 of the hardcover version of "Bury Elminster Deep". The exchange went thus:

Mirt grinned. "The two of ye would have made very good Lords of Waterdeep, ye know."

El and Storm exchanged glances again.

"As I recall," Storm added sweetly, "we did."

A perfect example of how answering one question (i.e. "Were any Chosen ever Lords of Waterdeep?") opening the door to several more questions.

Not only that, but it does clarify to others that Elminster was a hidden lord. But I do believe in one of my Elminster books, it blatantly says he was anyway. Or, at the very least, it vaguely mentions it. But yeah, it does open doors to several other questiosn as well...

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door," he used to say. "You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to." -- The Fellowship of the Ring, page 82

Waterdeep is so large, a random building table starts to make sense.

I found some more interesting canon lore within candlekeep books and various other novels on Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition. Very interesting actually!

I know several more but I'm not sure who's been disclosed and which are still protected under NDA, so I'll leave it a mystery.

I recommend the Ed Greenwood Presents Waterdeep series for lore on this point. Also, check out this thread (lots of spoilers, though!): http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12810

Ed Greenwood ANYTHING is something I'd gladly read. so that sounds perfect, just have to get my hands on the material! thanks for the info though, definitely adds to my interest of the City Of Splendors!
Thanks, Erik Scott de Bie.

For Waterdeep, this sounds about right. From what I gather, it wouldn't be Waterdeep if there wasn't scheming and what not going on.

For about 7 years, after Ahghairon died, the city was essentially run by a council of the masters of the various guilds...but that didn't end so well.

As hashimashadoo said, there was a war between guilds and noble families, resulting in a extinction of certain of these families (iirc) and few guilds very unappreciated, even centuries after these events. The rivalry between guilds and nobles are still going on today, but we are very far from a war. Or aren't we ?

See this kind of development in this great city, and the in-government fighting make it interesting! I definitely need to get more info on Waterdeep.

I figured as much, too many power grabbing masters. There is bound to be warring or at least a great disruption within the council.

Well met, Tyrant!

Yes I recall hearing something about new novels of Elminster, never knew they mentioned Waterdeep in those. But I shall gladly have a look and see for myself. Thank you for the information.

While I do recommend reading the books on general principle because they focus on Mystra being reborn, Manshoon, the remaining Chosen dealing without a goddess, etc., I can't recommend you read them to find out about Waterdeep. I believe that bit I mentioned was literally one line or part of one conversation. On the other hand, Mirt is in them, though he is likely no longer a Lord of Waterdeep as he has been gone for nearly a century.

Well regardless, thanks for the info on it. I do enjoy reading about Mystra and such, so that will still be enjoyable. See, Mirt kind of gave off a enigmatic vibe sometimes. Simply because he plays a big role in Waterdeep, from what little I read. Or at least it seemed that way to me.
