Well met all. Quick question. I have a player/character with a STR of 18/81. He wants a strength bow. Where can I find the information on this weapon? I know they have to be custom made, but what are the specs?

In 3E/v3.5 you could have your Composite Short and Longbows gain a Strength rating. It took advantage of the character's higher strength score and also penalized characters using one who didn't meet the score as well. The Composite longbow started off at 100gp and was Str +0. For an additional 100gp you could increase the Strength to +1 and so on at the cost of 100gp per +1 modifier. Shortbows were a bit cheaper, only costing 75gp per +1 Str modifier. Masterwork didn't affect the bow's STR-rating but if you wanted a Masterwork Composite Longbow (Str +3) it would cost 700gp (100gp original price, +300gp for masterwork quality, +300gp for the +3 Strength modifier).

Full information for bows in v3.5 can be found HERE

To my knowledge, 4E didn't have bows rated by Strength.

I believe you need to look to 2nd Edition, though there might be something in 4th.

It 2nd it appears that a strength bow was a better, custom built bow that provides a non magical damage up to strength bonus.

quote:
An adventurer who wishes to gain a damage bonus from high Strength when wielding a bow must purchase specially crafted bows. Such a bow costs the normal price for a bow plus the normal price again for every bonus point desired. Thus, a warrior with 17 Strength who wants a long bow (base cost 75 gp) that gives him his +1 bonus to damage rolls would have to pay a total of 150 gp. The same fighter with 18/00 Strength (+6 bonus to damage) would pay 525 gp. These bows can be strung and drawn only by characters of that Strength or higher. Others attempting this must make a successful bend bars/lift gates roll.

3rd offered masterwork and maybe there is something there as well.
