Posted - 17 Aug 2013 : 23:49:13 Magnetism in general. But, more specifically to my question, the planet's magnetic shield which protect against solar flares (and sometimes cause the aurora's when the two collide).
Would it be Silvanus as the god of nature? Or perhaps even Talos as the god of destruction (his lowering of the field's protection allowing for some destructive effects). Another deity? Or would this be considered more Ao's responsibility to maintain (being too 'big' for any one standard deity)?
If you were to create a deity who presided over this, what level of power would you give it? What powers? What spells would you give it's clergy? Etc... |

I disagree here. Planetbusting power is certainly something all greater (and I would even say intermediate) deities could do. They just don't do it since the others would oppose them immediately and even if they succeed, they don't have that many planets to spare
F&A even said that greater powers can create avatars of planetary size if they chose to do so |

Posted - 18 Aug 2013 : 20:28:43 Ao has dominion over toril's crystal sphere. It is his job to see that life stays possible in this solar system. IMO, I dnt think he would trust the gods to over see the magnetic sphere of the planet, because for one they tend to be petty, for two enough gods together like the gods of fury could overwhelm a single deity. Third..keep in mind this is a magic based world and not science.if anything it would be the job of the sun-gods to see that the sun doesn't bake the planet.notice there is ALWAYS a sun-god. My reasoning for ao being responsible is notice all through history whenever a cosmic threat threatens all life on toril,AO steps in to stop it. Like when the ice moon was hurling at toril or when the gods went off the deep end and stole the tablets of fate,or the making of abeir for the primordials to rule so they wouldn't kill toril. |

It was a two-part question actually regarding both which deity would cover it and what specifics would be applied for the portfolio.

I get what you're saying and agree with 50/50. SOMEONE has to be watching the magnetic field IMO (even if mortals aren't aware of it). As stated above, perhaps it goes beyond the gods or even Ao...but someone (in a polytheistic universe with gods above the gods) should be watching over such matters. |

For instance Selune is thought to have dominion over the moon and its tears, but she doesn't have a portfolio or have a domain for the tears but should anything happen to any of these celestial bodies people would surely offer up prayers to Selune and flooding her church with questions. |

As I recall, it was Ilsensine who said it was surprised the Realms didn't have a god of cups and saucers... But why would there be one? No one worships cups and saucers, or goes around talking about how influential they are in everyone's lives.
If it's not important enough for mortals to care about it, there's no need to have divine coverage of it. |

Posted - 18 Aug 2013 : 06:06:28 I would also go with Chauntea based on the creation of Toril stories/myths. Even creation stories/myths aside, Chauntea is about protecting and nurturing all of Toril and its natural habitants.
Silvanus is about balance and would lower the field should it be necessary to bring about or restore Toril to a balanced state.
Talos would be constantly messing with the magnetic field to maximize destruction. |

Posted - 18 Aug 2013 : 05:25:44 Agreed. Almost everything that protects Toril from anything is within the province of Chauntea. |

Posted - 18 Aug 2013 : 04:31:18 I'd go with Chauntea as well for the shield. She is supposed to be Toril after all. :) |

Posted - 18 Aug 2013 : 01:34:34 The Planets magnetic field is a by product of the Planet so the Magnetic Field would be the dominion of Chauntea. Solar Flares on the other hand are the dominion of the Sun, and I'd lean towards saying the Aurora's as an interaction of the two would be stared between them or fall on the shoulders of some demigod, not sure which. |

Posted - 18 Aug 2013 : 01:20:34 I'm with Kentinel - I think it would have to be a Primordial or higher. Thats not a portfolio, thats a basic building-block of the universe. |
