Posted - 02 Aug 2013 : 18:08:42 It seems with all its vastness I can't bring to mind any obviously contested religious sites in Faerun. It must be that in its history holy ground has been fought over, built upon, fortified and torn down again by competing clergies.
In novels (Paul Kemps Midnight Mask) I only recall the taking and retaking of one of the Twin Towers of the Eternal Eclips in the peaks of the Small Teeth mountains in Amn. First it was taken from a brotherhood of Cyricists by the archmage-psion Vhostym and then from him again by Masks Chosen. The Cyricists, led by archdeacon Blackwill Akhmalere, refitted it from the original temple of Bane.
Are there any other temples that come to mind with obvious signs of previous deities being worshipped? Or holygrounds that are shared with obvious tension between the differing factions? |

Posted - 05 Aug 2013 : 04:17:03 I can see Sharess reclaiming temples/brothels from Malcanthet, Glasya, Grazzt, and even Lovitar. I know the Feast Hall of Eternal Delights has been rebuilt a couple of times I believe.
And Basheba and Tymora fighting over temples of Tyche.
If the dead gods are coming back then expect some serious fighting over former temples claimed by thier successors.

Posted - 03 Aug 2013 : 12:38:52 I'd expect Elturel would be point of conflict between faithful of Torm and Amaunator in the 15th century. It's ruled by Tormtar, yet sits beneath a second sun attributed to Amaunator. I'm sure the Amaunatans would want access or control of that. http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Elturel |

Posted - 03 Aug 2013 : 02:57:38 Another cool real world example is Heliopolis of Alexander the Greats empire. Alexander let the ruined city of Baalbek be built as a pilgrim city to Helios. The romans later built a joint temple to Jupiter, Venus and Bacchus in the 'high place' of Baalbeks ruined temple. A former statue of Baal was redecorated as Zeus/Jupiter, as were a local furtility goddess and hero god.
I see druid groves as rather contested grounds, especially with the predatory mindset of archdruid politics.
Shar is known for targetting whole clergies for destruction, but she sees all of Faerun as contested.
The Fury Gods and their clergies I see as very territorial too.
Perhaps some of the neutral gods like Helm and Hoar might have fought wars over major locations. |

Posted - 03 Aug 2013 : 00:05:07 It depends on the relationship of the gods (Sharess and Sune are more likely to build a joint temple then Bane and Cyric), and the purpose (I can see Bane and Cyric building so called "Conquest" temples over their foes temples just for the spite of it). So there... |

Posted - 02 Aug 2013 : 23:54:30 Possible exception Godswalk Keep in the Borderlands, its holy to Sharess, Jergal, and Gargos, all three of which gain power some how from it, and that's bound to cause conflict between the followers. How often this turns violent is unknown. |

Posted - 02 Aug 2013 : 23:51:37 I think most of these sorts of conflicts are between Gods like Bane and Cyric and it doesn't have to be anything spefically special.
Other then that contested holy ground is rare in the realms or not fully explored. |

Apparently, real-world people disagree. It's been two thousand years and there's no sign of peace in Palestine. |

Posted - 02 Aug 2013 : 21:12:54 With the sheer number of gods in the realms and the fact that clergy regularly perform what we would consider miracles, there would have to be something extremely significant about a site to make a religion consider a piece of ground "holy" beyond what they can perform with normal consecration, or at least I'd think so. The god would have had to have set foot there and done something major I'd think. For instance, I can see the Mulhorandi considering the Godswatch Mountains (formerly Teyla Shan) as holy because that's where the entire pantheon landed. The place where Mystra died at the hands of Helm might be considered holy. If the god was once a mortal, his home might be considered a good place for a temple, but I don't see it as particularly holy enough ground to war over. |
