Magic of Faerun also details Mage Fairs a bit, so you could use the arcane duels and contests detailed in Complete Arcane at a Mage Fair. |

I want something that could last an hour, not a simple game of bones lol.
Something that last hours, with dice. A tournament is the answer.
The grand prize awarded based on points of skills in many contests. Sword play to first blood or disarm, archery, dagger throwing, arm wrestle, Joust and so on.
Of course you could have simple armed conflict that takes hours to resolve because of how many dice need to be rolled or how low damage is inflicted on success per round. |

Posted - 25 Jul 2013 : 23:18:32 I suspect most people don't have competitions and races involving murder or deadly risk. In fact, most (human) societies probably outlaw anything of the sort and punish any participants who get caught.
Although things like underground boxing matches, duels, gladiatorial contests, pit fights, and martial arts competitions do exist in our history, and some of these things may continue to exist under the radar today. I suppose even the most aggressive athletes and fighters are content to simply beat each other to a pulp and while deaths do sometimes occur they aren't the real objective of such matches.
"Murder races" in the Realms might be officially or unofficially sanctioned within assassins' guilds. Perhaps organizations like the Zhentarim implicitly understand that one advances in rank and power by assassating superiors, as might elite echelons within daemonfey and draconic and orcish legions. Red wizards are notorious for engaging openly or clandestinely within spectacular duels, and for opportunistically or methodically eliminating slaves or household entourage to provoke their opponents. Assassinating your way to promotion (and always being on the lookout to control ambitious underlings) is characteristic behaviour for fiends, at least among devilish baatezu sorts, so I suppose it might be an attitude inherited by many of their cambion or tiefling offspring in the Realms. |

Posted - 25 Jul 2013 : 23:08:30 Well removing dice roles totally appears rather hard. How would you determine a winner in a contest if not a test of skills?
Now if you want many dice roles, I can offer a few ideas. If you want because of skill rank, ability rank, one wins automatically and it does not become a contest.
The best that you might come up with are riddles or puzzles, however most players will figure them out even if the PC could not do so. |
