Hi there all you happy lot.
First of all my deepest apologies for interrupting your sunbathing on this hot summer day in July.
My question is about the stage of dying (-1 to -9).

The thing is, I have found this feat (Second Wind from Miniatures Hand Book/MHB), that makes it possible to heal yourself of a number of points of damage equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum 1)as a free action.
Then I thought that you might be able to use it while on the dying stage (at -1 to -9 hit points)and then stabilize yourself.
It is a free action to use the ability, but would you think it possible to use it, when you are at a dying stage and hence can't take any actions (PHB 145)?
Then again, it should not be considered an action as such, when it is free and require nothing to use it.

I will be thankful (as always), if you can come with your opinions regarding this question.
It might stand written somewhere or it might be up to a DM to decide. Never the less, please enlighten me with your knowledge/opinions oh great oracles from the internet (when it comes to D&D) :)

Thanks in advance.

Yours Sincerely
Zeffaniah.

Thanks alot for all your help. It even sounds as if you all agree on each other, which ain't always the outcome of a question :)

They all hit it on the head depending though on the class, crusaders can delay damage a turn and barbarians can rage even in the negatives if they have the right feat.

All the usual warnings still apply be aware of your health bar and make sure those around you know you are hurt while in combat. This isn't a computer game that gives you information with a HUD you need to tell others if you are seriously hurt.

And screw potions save up your money and buy a wand of vigor for when not in combat.

Normally, yes. There's always a handful of conditions that allow to circumvent it. Including actions in negative HP.

Diehard (PHB 3.5) feat - get automatically stabilized and "disabled" instead of "dying". But...
Diehard (Ghostwalk) feat - allows to take a single action/round, disabled if stabilized.
Remain Conscious (Masters of the Wild, Sword and Fist) feat - allows to take a partial action/round.
Autohypnosis (Expanded Psionics Handbook) skill - allows to convince oneself "you're not really dying"...

Kentinal beat me to it.

If you can't take any actions, you can't perform free actions.

Once a dying character becomes stabilized, your condition changes to disabled per the rules. Disabled characters can take either a move action (at half speed) or a standard action (but not both) each round.

At that point you have the option to perform free actions.

As I recall -1 to -9 a person is unconscious, thus not able to take any action at all, just continue to die. Another character must provide aid to get character to at least +1 before using any action.

From SRD 3.5
quote:
Dying

A dying character is unconscious and near death. She has -1 to -9 current hit points. A dying character can take no actions and is unconscious. At the end of each round (starting with the round in which the character dropped below 0 hit points), the character rolls d% to see whether she becomes stable. She has a 10% chance to become stable. If she does not, she loses 1 hit point. If a dying character reaches -10 hit points, she is dead.
