I'm running a 2E FR campaign online right now, but I'm using a digital copy of the 3E 4 part Dragon Magazine Faerun map.
I know that the FRCS 3E map sort of condensed some of the open spaces on the 2E map, but this one seems different even from that one. I want to use it because it has an incredible amount of detail, but I'm wondering what the major geographic discrepancies are between it and the old 2E maps. |

The Sword Coast North was drastically altered by the 3e map mutilation. The village of Westbridge and the Westwood vanished entirely IIRC, and the shape of the roads changed. I assume there are other omissions too. Another area of major wonkification is the mountains east of Mulhorand and the Shaar.
The 4 maps from Dragon should be a simple blowup/expansion of the FRCS map, but it makes sense that some locations might have been added to the larger map, and of course all the geographical features are easier to distinguish.
If it were me, I would take any new locations you want to use from the 3e map, and plot them onto the 2e map. But I'm of the belief that the 2e map was the last accurate map we got of the Realms.
And kudos on the N5 update. I thought about doing this with another module in the N series, but haven't gotten to it yet. I think my "To Do" list is looking up to Sage as a role model.  |

Ahh...curious about this as well, considering I have been trying to adapt Under Illefarn as a campaign starter for 3.5 for quite some time. I ran it in 2nd, it shouldn't be too hard, but cartography would come into play a bit I think.
Most likely in the form of shorter distances though IIRC. |

I guess to further contextualize my question, I'm currently running N5 Under Illefarn with several of Eric Boyd's edits which puts our campaign in the Daggerford/Hellgate Keep area. Assuming the game holds together, I may want to run the Marco Volo series which takes a fair bit of travel, and thus cartography may become important. |

Definitely watch for Markustay's response. Granted, I am sure several of us, including myself, could answer this, Markustay is the cartographer, and will know it very well.
I know this was mentioned in an early 3e issue of Dragon, though I cannot recall the issue now. That explained why Evermeet was off the map. |
