Posted - 11 Jul 2013 : 22:29:04 I have finally decided to take it upon myself to really write up a homebrew version of the Realms. Perhaps I'll make a wiki of it on Obsidian Portal?
Anyway, I'm really tired of a lot of the bland, flavourless lore that has overwhelmed the Realms. Everything is stated. There is hardly anything left to the imagination. There aren't any mysteries that really make the readers think. It doesn't feel old. What happened?
So, this is what I'm going to do: I'm going to rewrite a lot of the lore into a homebrew setting that could be on a comparable level with fantasy worlds like The Elder Scrolls, Second Apocalypse/Prince of Nothing; perhaps even some Dragon Age and Dark Souls. Something very thematic and mysterious: something mythic.
To my main point: does anyone want to contribute? It's totally free (kinda goes without saying) and is just to be done for fun. If you really want to, I'd be really happy to see submitted pieces. Just choose a topic that you'd like to tackle. There will be a couple guidelines to follow though, of course.
Rules/Guidelins:
Keep it mythic and mysterious. Need help? Read a little bit of some of the Elder Scrolls books which can be found on the Imperial Library (imperial-library.info). Especially those concerning the Mer (Elves). Also draw on sources I mentioned above, if you know of them at all.
You will kind of have to call dibs on something. I'm already claiming anything and everything to do with the Gold Elves, Aryvandaar, Siluvanede and Evermeet. However, you can make suggestions.
God works in mysterious ways. Know that phrase? Well, lets keep it that way The gods should be very low key and should almost never intervene directly. Gods can be fighting each other and still worshiped simultaneously too.
There are NO alignments. Let your character's/people's/etc actions define what they are. Don't make them fit into any specific category (LG, NE, CN).
That's about it. I'm making this mainly as a writing project, so the more people involved, the better. It'd be a great way to practice my writing, especially since that's one of the things I want to be. |

To be clear, are you looking for people to write stories or descriptions? Thanks.
Basically, just some lore for right now. It's going to be an open sort of thing for people to write stories for, mainly for those wanting to practice writing in mythic fantasy, but anyone can contribute. All I ask for is adherence to the lore that is accepted and proper grammar and spelling and keeping with the theme :) |

I get the idea a combination of both, like how Ed writes FR lore (and how most of 1e was presented - 'uncertain third person').
Thats why so many non-RPGers got addicted to the Realms - the sourcebooks read like stories.
That's the reason I'm still so into Shadowrun and Battletech. Their sourcebooks move the stories forward and are much more than "here's the latest tech/skills/etc."
The Hordes/Warmachine books do that, too. |

Posted - 12 Jul 2013 : 12:03:54 I like your idea very much, maybe the one point I kind of disagree is alignment. If you use it as a guide, it can be quite useful. See, even if I'd rule out alignments as they are, I'd give paladins their powers only if they kept an ideal, for example. As I'd keep dwarven society very organized, and elves and faeries very wild and free. Only a suggestion, of course! |
