Posted - 25 May 2013 : 23:22:53 Am I the only one who has had a very unpleasant experience while participating in threads on that forum???
The way people talk and the tone of their post was not to my liking?
Has anyone experienced this, or am I just having a bad day??

Posted - 22 Jul 2013 : 22:02:53 Only other gaming site I've ever.been in were icewind Dale(that's where I learned of this site),and menzoberranzan. I defected to candlekeep because I liked the good atmosphere, the downloadilbe info, and that pub that you have were you could role-play and interact with other ppl.I learned alot of things that really enriched my campaign to the point that I abandoned the dragon lance setting and played only FR,ravenloft, and planescape. Thank you candlekeep for all the great work you have done. |

While I like The Order of the Stick a lot, I avoid the messageboards because I also find their atmosphere unpleasant.
I've only gone on to their boards once or twice, myself, to check out comments on the latest comic. |

I myself have had some negative experiences on other forums...
I used to be active on the HMP forums, but nearly left when one of the moderators -- who disagreed with me on a particular point -- edited a post of mine to reflect his opinion. On that forum, unlike this one, a post edited by a moderator wasn't flagged as having been edited, so there was no proof. The fact that another moderator and the site owner worked with me and at least appeared to believe me about it was about the only thing that kept me there (at least at the time).
I had other issues with that particular moderator, too, and I now use him as kind of a check -- I ask if he would do something, and if so, it's something I should not do!
I also had a couple of bad experiences on the Privateer Press forums... One of them was my bad, for not reading all the rules. But the other time, I was flat-out attacked for my post. I had suggested that since Magnus was a former Cygnaran warcaster, and because he was smart enough to design and build his own 'jacks from the ground up and still had access to use some Cygnaran troops, then it would make sense if he was able to use at least a small list of Cygnaran 'jacks. I was roundly attacked for wanting to have my cake and eat it, too (even though I specified that I didn't play mercs), and a lot of really nonsensical reasons were given for why this could never happen.
A few years later, the Bad Seeds tier list was published, and it not only gave Magnus access to more Cygnaran troops, it also gave him access to a small list of Cygnaran 'jacks. I went back to the PP forums, intending to find that old thread and gloat. And oh my, I was so prepared to gloat!
Sadly, the thread had been purged after a couple years of inactivity, and I was denied that opportunity.
didnt you have a small issue pop up on wizards boards once or twice?I'd love to hear about it
The tale of my wrongful banning from the WotC forums has been told before. |

Posted - 28 May 2013 : 16:08:19 Not to mention a 2-3 year stint of turmoil here at the 'Keep after the announced changes to the Realms with the advent of 4e. Erik Scott de Bie should win some sort of award for his tireless work to help bring peace in these halls. Sadly, he has not had much time to spend here for the past several months. |

Posted - 27 May 2013 : 22:10:30 I've been a member over there for a few years. I've seen some unpleasant exchanges. I hate to say, but I have been part of a handful. There, and here unfortunately, I have allowed myself to get emotionally involved a few times. I believe that is usually the case. Over there, to me, the conversations are generally quite civil. I stick almost exclusively to the Media forum though, so the others might be the Wild West in comparison. But, at least for the Media forum, I do find that the tone is usually civil and the discussion can go off in interesting and insightful directions (the tangents are sometimes more interesting than the main discussion).
Having said that, I will say that there are some outspoken critics of the FR novels (and likely the setting in general) so anyone going should be ready to hear them called out as trash by a few folks who will come across as an elitist in just about every way possible. I just avoid those discussions.
I'm behind on the comic but I thouht it was worthwhile to read the first few hundred when I came across it. |

Nicolai, although I've been reading the OOTS comics since the very start, I quit reading the GITP forums more than a year ago, some months before the Kickstarter. I quit visiting those forums partly because the tone had been getting more and more unpleasant, as you write (and as also many others have been pointing out on those forums and on other forums too), and partly because I've been loosing interest in the speculations on what the next comic will be and how the plot arc will span.
But what really strikes me is the tone of the posts of The Giant himself. He seems to me more and more annoyed at his readers' comments, sometimes bashing at them even if they were reasonably nice and partially right.
My feeling is that, between the unexpected treasure of the Kickstarter (that I supported, mind you) and his thumb accident, he finds himself overloaded with a burden of responsibilities which may stress him a lot. If it is so, that is completely comprehensible. I just hope this won't reflect on the quality of the comics, on the long term.
I, myself, do not visit those forums anymore - it also allows me to enjoy the comics much more.

Posted - 26 May 2013 : 19:08:37 Yeah I don't think I ever felt any really negative feelings on this forum. We've all had heated debates, but they have either remained civil, or they stop right before it starts getting personal. Can't say that for the WoTC forums. Seems like there are some very antagonistic people over there. |

Agreed. Not the number one on my list of friendliest, but definitely near it. |

Posted - 25 May 2013 : 23:37:28 I suspect this is due to the fact that we have an environment here that they simply can't match: climate-controlled Sagespace and a friendly hamster with opposable thumbs.
(I didn't even know about the site until I googled it, so I don't know about the tone of their forums, but the above sounds reasonable to me.) |
