Posted - 16 Mar 2013 : 18:22:29 The absolute best place to go for information is the 2e adventure Wyrmskull Throne.
In brief, it's the throne of Shanatar. It was forged at the creation of the realm, when the dwarves kicked the drow out of the caverns that became the heart of Alatorin. The drow matron had four blue dragons as battle slaves, and once the dwarves had killed them, the Throne rose from the stone and grabbed the skulls of the four dragons as its feet.
It's a really major artifact. It floats three feet above the ground, flies at will, flies through stone at will, teleports to any of the Ruling Scepters at will, can banish any wielder of a Scepter back to where they were last teleported, breathes blue dragon breath 8/day, surround the wielder in a forcefield 4 hours/day, and turn into a dragon.
The catch is that it can only be worked by a direct descendant of Shanat (and the only ones left are the ruling duergar of Underspires), or by someone who has the Alatorin Scepter and puts it in a slot in one of the armrests. Anyone else tries and the forcefield comes up and holds them immobile until they starve to death.
But all that is really secondary to its cultural significance. The Wyrmskull Throne is the symbol of the greatest dwarven realm in Faerun's history. If it were recovered, and especially if there was an heir to sit in it and claim rulership, dwarves would flock to their banner from all over the planet. |
