Posted - 01 Feb 2013 : 08:57:51 I'm glad to hear it's in the works, at any rate.
As for me, cannon doesn't much matter at all. If I like it, then it becomes a part of MY realms, if not I don't care who wrote it, its not making it in. That ritual at the end of Blackstaff - NOT in my Realms, even though every word was wiz of the coast published and has the FR logo proclaiming it canon.
Other things I've read here from the imaginations of some of the members - writers and fans alike - make it in. I'm pretty sure once upon a time Ed suggested this for every Realms fan, and therefore, since I'm doing what Ed told me to, I have my own little Ed endorsed canon which I can proclaim to my heart's delight :D.
The best example of this for me is my NPC himself TMM. I got his name from the list of Mythal casters in Ruins of Myth Drannor set a long time ago. After which came Ed's Elminster in Myth Drannor, and arcane age products. Basically, those products through my character's whole history out the window :P, oh and made him a chick according to one line I read. Not gonna happen. So in my world, the Masked Mage is a mighty spellcaster from long ago, one of the Seven Wizards, and a teacher of Elminster & Khelben (and many other biggies). That is not likely to change any time soon, no matter how much contradicting canon gets published :)
That little rant said, thanks in advance for all the work sage, I've been trying to read through all the posts but my eyes are just not up to that task :P |

Sage may have proven those words true too often to throw down. *ducks and hides*
That said... why not put up what you have, Sage? And make incremental updates as Sagetime(tm) permits. Just sayin... not tryin to be a jerk. (it comes naturally to me, without any effort.)
I've actually considered this. And I have discussed the possibility with Alaundo in times past. Maybe I need to step up on this and actually get moving. |

I don't think that's entirely true.
Ed's made pretty clear he considers some people to be "the" go-to when it comes to certain aspects of the Realms.
I consider Brian Cortijo to be just as legitimate a source of information about Cormyr as Ed. Likewise Steven Schend about Waterdeep. Pretty much. Ed has often suggested that the answers any of the particular lorelords -- like George Krashos and Brian Cortijo -- may have provided in his stead are largely what Ed himself may have said. And in some cases, even more than what Ed may have conceived.
I consider that as-close-to-canon as we can get in terms of "unofficial" lore -- that is, lore posted by the likes of individuals such as Krashos and Cortijo at Candlekeep. It's unlikely to ever be contradicted by WotC, unless the company decides to revisit much of the older lore in the next edition. So it's largely all pretty secure stuff -- and stuff I'd consider to occupy a kind of special middle-ground between the casual 'fanfic' as Markus identified above, and the published lore we purchase in sourcebooks released by WotC. |

Granted neither of these people have a contract that instantly makes what they say official, but if one of them answers a question of mine about a topic and time period of the Realms with which they're strongly associated (i.e. for which they have one or more writing credits), I'm running with that answer and I'm not looking back. |

There are archives for Steven Schend and Elaine Cunningham up to around 2005 that Kuje and I had previously compiled. We've also added "Other Designers" compilations of replies from Candlekeep to various downloadable "So Saith Ed" archives.
I'm still updating both Steven and Elaine's compilations -- it's just taking a lot of time catching up on nearly 7 years of backlogged replies to compile. I've also got one for George Krashos as well, Gray Richardson, and Brian and Matt James too. They'll all be uploaded to Candlekeep just as soon as I've caught up to January 2013.

Posted - 31 Jan 2013 : 15:07:05 Unfortunately, there is a reason why we only see 'Ed compilations' - what HE SAYS is canon; its part of his contract.
What anyone else here says - regardless of past publication credits - is just 'fanfic'.
I'm not trying to be a jerk - I love all the lore provided us by the writers unofficially - but if we start compiling them then someone may think they have some sort of official status, and the waters start to get very muddied.
From what I understand, the 'right guys' are in communication with each other all the time, and have access to each other (to pick each other's brains). As for the rest of us... I kinda like sifting through tons of stuff to find the 'juicy bits'. I feel like an archaeologist, of sorts. |
