We know there are academies and universities in the Realms, where people can study the Arts and pursue scholarly endeavors. But what about ordinary schools, such as elementary or high school (for the equivalent thereof)? What is the literacy percentage?

Generally I'd think any church would teach literacy and math, after all even some evil churches take in Orphans and the like, if only to prepare the next generation of evil.

They'd teach basic literacy so that childern can read the holy books and basic math because its required for basic functioning. Beyond that it'd vary between churches.

Sune's church might focus on art and poetary.

Sharess' teaches its wards other skills, like using all your senses and other stuff, if Sands of the Soul is any indictation.

I have nos read the section in Elminster's Forgotten Realms, and I understand better now.

All right, thanks. I'll look into it.

Yes, Elminster's Forgotten Realms covers this well. That being said "schooling" will probably have a large factor based on what temples are nearby. If a temple of Deneir is nearby, then literacy amongst commoners will spike. If a temple of Gond is nearby, then knowledge of making craftsmen will spike as the church would probably consider it a holy calling to train children. Both of these might also focus on mathematics as well, though from different directions. Now, put in a church of Chauntea and children will get less book lore but more herbal/plant and animal lore. A church of Sune would be more inclined I would think to having a "finishing academy" for young women to learn how to be pleasing to their mates and run a successful household, as well as possibly an art college.

Check Elminster's Forgotten Realms. There's, IIRC, two pages on various examples of mundane schools, as well as some talk about what kinds of schools in general exist.

Thanks for the links, but I already knew there were colleges ad specialist schools (such as bards and wizards) but I'm asking about normal schools, if you will, such as a child or teenager who wasn't in any training school might attend. Where would they go for a general education?

there is some arcane university or something in silverymoon.
