Posted - 19 Jan 2004 : 03:22:48 In response to some posts I found in this scroll http://www.candlekeep.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1450 (Please read the scroll first) I am starting The Faults of Cyric Thread. During the time that this scroll was written, I was indisposed with Vhaeraun's holy day, The Masked Lord's Embrace, but I am back with a vengeance!
There is no way that Cyric could take on the Seldarine, or even the Drow Deities of the Demonweb because he is utterly insane! He tries to create chaos and strife within his own chruch only! He's almost as bad as that spider-kisser Lolth! Ezinder the Dark, my loyal friend, was correct in this much. Cyric, it would be good if you visited this topic and defended your mad god, as you will probably be the only one who will.
If anyone has thoughts they would like to voice about Cyric(the deity, not the scribe), his faults, his mistakes, and so on, Please Post.

Yes indeed I read that but also another about Cyric's grammer mistakes, I remember you also did the same to Dracandos for a while ago. I may overreacted about your last post but it triggered me to protest your expertness on the linguistics.
Protest my expertness on the linguistics? First, I've never claimed to be an expert. Second, you shouldn't protest someone for being an expert -- which, again, I'm not. I help out when people need it. It's what teachers do. You don't want to learn, fine, don't pay attention. Cyric didn't complain, did he? What right do you have to do so?
You did overreact. You acted as if I insulted Shadowlord (which I didn't), lectured everyone here about proper English (again, did not), and acted as if English is a superior language (which it is most certainly not). Next time, read carefully before making such insulting mistakes.

Thank you, Mr. Lee, but I'm afraid I have to set some things straight here as well.
Just because I have (at the time of this post) 2690 posts does not mean I know more than Roewyn. And don't take him to task for challenging a more "senior" scribe; not only did he do nothing wrong, I did a very similar thing at the start of my own stay here. The only thing Roewyn did wrong, in fact, was be rude. Excessively so, in my opinion, though I can understand where he might have felt justification (even though I disagree with said justification).
Additionally, I do not claim to be a master of Realmslore. That's simply the title given to scribes with over 2000 posts. Those who were here when that happened to me will recall I protested the title on those grounds.

That I disagree with. Not the first part -- that is to be commended, so long as you never make the mistake of not admitting mistakes. I've known far too many people like that.
What I disagree with is what I've already stated -- I think you were rude, for the reasons that again I have already stated. Respect is earned, not granted. Politeness is another thing entirely.
Now, I believe I've beaten this to death. Everyone please go back to the topic. Thank you. |

Mr Lee I may have 4 posts but when I have sth to say, I just say it. Number of posts count only for his or her knowlage about realms. I know Bookwyrm is one of the best on realms lore in Candlekeep but I won't swallow my words because of anything Respect is important and I did not insult anyone when I put my argument so you better show some respect too.
Well I meant that Cyric wants no ally stronger than him, I believe ,for he wants to be no puppet. And Shar is obviously after some secret schemes and may use Cyric for her cause if Cyric thinks the terms are for his good also, he may participate. But I think that the only alliance will be against Mystra and that might lead to a new god's war. |

Posted - 23 Jan 2004 : 07:34:05 Indeed. Shadowlord, while you've certainly appologized properly, I'd like to point out a simple rule of thumb I use. If the person's ID box lists a country, I both assume that's where they're from and that the official language of that country is that person's primary language. If the country is one where English isn't a native language, I give the member a lot of tolerance for grammar and spelling (and especially for the latter, which I'm not so good at myself), and may help out some.
If, however, the person's country is Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States, I will hold them to a standard where the person actually writes without butchering the language. This includes careless spelling, grammar, and "chatspeak."
If the person's box lists no country, or a country where English is known but uses different rules (I've known a lot of Africans who speak English while using strange-sounding grammar as a standard), then I wait until I form a conclusion about them.
For instance, I've drawn the conclusion that Dracandos is American, and so hold him to the standards listed above. (Dracandos, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.) He prefers to write in chatspeak, and so doesn't meet my private standards, but I hold no power over him, so I don't attempt to change him beyond the occasional polite request.
A lot of people don't meet these standards, while many exceed them. I don't condemn them for the former, though; at the most, I'll ask them to change (in regards to chatspeak) or let them know when they're doing something wrong (in regards to those for whom English is a second language).
That said, Shadowlord, I am well aware of the fact that the standard language of this forum is English. I see no reason why you can't point out errors when needed -- so long as you do so in a polite form. I can tell that you meant no harm (the to end the post should conveyed that to all), though you could have phrased it better. Certainly anyone with top grades in an LA course should aid those who will let him; just make sure you don't insult those who could whup your hiny in their native language.
Now, to get this back on course -- Cyric sucks! |

Posted - 23 Jan 2004 : 05:03:50 Shadowlord do not make fun of our grammar and spelling, as Ezindir said english is a second lanuage to us. Actually I don`t mind , self-irony is a very important thing
By the way, how many lanuages do you speak?
And just to keep the topic going; I don`t think Cyric is able to make an alliance with anyone, he is doomed to try to back stab them when he got what he needed, this makes him a not very high priority by other goods.

Posted - 23 Jan 2004 : 00:48:25 You are right, of course. Cyric, please accpet my most humble apologies. I understand that English is a second language for you and that you are trying your best. However, I have an A+ in my Language Arts class, and its kind of hard for me to understand bad grammar. My most sincere apologies. |
