I hate the texture of the cover. The art is great, but what the hell is with that cover? It is tactically displeasing. The same thing with the Menzoberranzan book.

Why are we getting this ambiguously rough yet smooth cover. I had menzoberranzan over it last night, and intuitively it seemed the book would resist being slid from friction. yet it slid over EFR fine. The cover texture is really bothering me...

But I love the INSIDES of the book SO MUCH!!!!

Eric I am talking about the texture of the front covers of Menzoberranzan and Elminster's Realms. It is silly, and stupid, but the feel bothers me. Do you think the savings of eliminating the coating as THO eluded to really adds up to anything signigicant. I am certainly willing to pay an extra $2 for a book if it means I don't have the cover that feels like a dirt magnet.

Indeed.

Hi, Mournblade. I, too, hate the texture of the book's cover. It's a fad right now in the book industry, that saves costs because a layer of plastic bonding that you and I are used to being there (it seals the inked layers of the cover and gives dustjackets their "shiny" look, when new) isn't there. The new J. K. Rowling book, A CASUAL VACANCY, the latest Louise Penny, THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY, and many other titles have this "creepy feel" cover.
Sigh.

Are the savings really all that dramatic, or is it one of those things where the savings really shows up in volume?

I think the cover art selection was poor. It's well drawn/painted, but the subject matter and placement are wrong for the book I feel. I would've loved to have seen something more identifiable with the Realms, a landmark or something of a throwback to the 1st Edition/2nd feel it has inside. But everyone has an opinion and someone must love it (hopefully Ed himself).

The cover textually feels okay to me, not sure what you guys are on about! :)

Its a conspiracy - they don't want people to buy real books anymore, because they make more off of incorporeal ones. They are trying to make all new 'physical' books revolting - its subliminal. 'Virtual' is the new reality.

Haven't got the Ed's book yet but yes the Menzo book's cover also feel a bit weird. Like it's "dusty" or something I don't know how to explain :D

Thanks for that hooded one. I thought it was a fad, but I guess it is here to stay. It just feels like the book can easily attract dirt. I am not liking it.

I also agree that artists should consider sword placement more. After SCA heavy fighting and now fencing, it is something I notice right off the bat. I try not to let it bother me any more than being a science teacher watching the TV show FRINGE. There are things there that make me cringe.

It still does not make me cringe like the book cover though. It just feels wrong.

Don't you know not to judge a book by it's cover?
Hoondatha Posted - 17 Oct 2012 : 16:06:40
Agreed on both counts. The cover's texture is decidedly weird, and not very pleasant. And the cover art is just plain stupid. Ugly guy, troll in a decidedly non-troll capacity (seriously, who uses them as beats of burden?). And worst for me at least is that the way he's using his sword is completely ridiculous. That long sword is going to do absolutely nothing, and he's at least as likely to dislocate his shoulder with that short sword as successfully stab. I realize that most artists don't have a clue about sword fighting, or even fencing, but come on. A more realistic pose with either weapon would have been much more deadly-looking, and therefore cooler.

I do agree that the feel of the cover is strange, I also don't find the cover art that great. It is well done of course, just not to my taste. I have really liked the interior art though, so far my only complaint with the inside of the book is that it isn't the size of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook! 191 pages isn't enough, heck nearly 600 pages like the rulebook probably wouldn't be enough, but I'd happily buy it. I very much hope that they follow this with a Volume 2, 3, heck with a Volume 20 if it's possible to get that many.
