I think I've counted 264 excluding Drizzt's reprints and a few more (reprints of Mrs. Cunningham's Songs & Swords books, they're also a part of the Harpers series). Still, the site is missing some of the new releases so it's not much of a big deal =) |

I'd say around 160-170, I own them and read them all except for a few of the new releases (10-12 novels, I believe). I live in Turkey and none of the realms novels except Salvatore's works are sold here in their original language -and the ones that are translated are just Mr. Salvatore's and Mrs. Cunningham's works.
I'm importing them whenever I get the chance / have the budget to do so. Oh, and no one that I know (in Turkey) owns / reads FR novels like I do. |

I didn't bother counting them, because that would require re-arranging my book in my library. You see, I only categorized the shelves into Fantasy, GLBT, Thriller, Classics, and Other, and my FR books are mixed with so many Fantasy novels. My best estimate is 100-something.

Which book, if I may ask? You might have picked the wrong one at the wrong time. The 'newer' books, for me, are better, specially those by James Wyatt and Don Bassinghthwaite.
Eberron may not be as 'diverse' as the Realms, but its interesting peoples make up for the lack of thousands of cultures. |

And I want to try some Golarion books at some point - anyone have any recommendations?
IIRC Jander Sunstar, a main character from Vampire of the Mists, was originally from the Realms. That's the beauty of Ravenloft: the Mists can grab ANYONE. Soth from Knight of the Black Rose was also originally from Dragonlance.
There's also more "Jander-in-the-Realms" tales to be found in the various anthologies:- "One Last Drink" from Realms of Valor, "The Quiet Place" from Realms of Magic, and "Blood Sport" from Realms of Infamy. |

Have no fears, Markus, this "over-bearing" draconic theme isn't as pervasive as some would have you believe. I've read every DRAGONLANCE novel published, and aside from the dragon-centric novels/trilogies that deal primarily with either the chromatic and/or metallic wyrms, the stories of the DRAGONLANCE Saga have almost always been about the struggles of the mortal races. If you avoid the early books of the 'Fifth Age' [which were heavily draconic-based], you should find something to like among the tales in the series.

Right out of the gate, I'd recommend Winter Witch by Elaine Cunningham and the two books written by Dave Gross -- Prince of Wolves and Master of Devils. The entire series of novels published so far have all been great reads, but those I just particularly mentioned have been the stories that have really stood out for me.
Though, I should note that I haven't yet read City of the Fallen Sky or Blood of the City... and I really want to read them both because the former sounds awesome, and the latter has a featured character called a cobblestone druid that I'm just so eager to read more about. |

128 for me. As for the other settings, I've read 17 Dragonlance books, 8 Eberron books, and 5 Dark Sun books (The Prism Pentad). The only setting that I have read anything close to that number is Star Wars with 61 books read so far.
A lot of the Realms novels I have read have been "newer", but I have 50 or so other Realms books in a pile that I have to read through and many of them are older (like the Harpers series). I do get a little bit of a different feel from some of the older books, but overall I don't prefer one era over another. |

I voted none. I love the Realms, but its my sandbox to play in and decide what happens, not someone elses to control and me read about. Playing a roleplaying game (even reading about roleplaying games is entirely different to reading a book about a fictional world.
A book needs definite goodies and baddies, a hopeless struggle of some kind and a journey to the end to overcome the seamingly insurmountable odds. Its all very epic and im sure is lovely to read about but the minute the book begins it limits my options as a DM and my players options.
I dont mind finding out in sourcebooks what happens in a particular event (particularly in any 2nd edition sourcebook) as they had a habit of creating more plot hooks than they end which i can in turn use, and i usually have enough details to rewrite my own version of events involving the players somehow in a supporting role.
Im not too happy about being told that Myth Drannor the worlds greatest ruin was cleanse, that all the Phaerimm are gone, that a destroyed Netheril enclave was resurrected (especially when a relatively intact enclave existed just down the waterway), or that the empire of Netheril has returned in someway and that there were two Wulgreth's involved or that some munchkins solved all the problems and left nothing for my players to deal with.
Having novels about the realms is fine but it shouldnt affect the world and close off my options, they should be an option in themselves that presents how an event might have happened but is not necessary to the history of the Realms if you dont want it.
More and more i find myself having to look up details of what happened in books on the internet because events happening in a book have been detailed in the history that closed off some of my own ideas and gave me nothing further to work with.
Did i mention though that i love the Realms. No matter what someone else does with it good or bad im going to rewrite it all to my own image of how it should be. |

At first I thought it was a little over fifty, but when I started counting them in my head it was more like a hundred.
I've read only three other D&D novels - 1 Eberron, 2 GH. Thats all other settings combined. If you want to count other game novels, the only ones that come to mind are 3 Warcraft books. Thats not counting series that were later turned into games.
So I guess FR wins. |

I own all of the Realms books I have read and wanted to collect them all at one point. However, as I got older I branched off into reading other things and prefer those today. Buying the new Realms books from a completionist standpoint just seemed silly. |
