When demons are banished from the realms they are barred from the prime material plane for 100 years (unless the banisher ends it prematurely). Is this the same for devils and arch devils? If so a source would be appreciated. |

I also agree that the combat could do it, if it were a binding trial by combat between the two (haven't read the battle between Driz'zt and Errtu, thus can't comment there). Lose the ability to come to the 'Realms for 100 years out of an infinitely long lifespan, or get a soul. Yep, I can see a devil making that bet.
You know, based on what I've seen for the documented uses of a soul.... if I were a demon/devil I wouldn't make that bet. Not being able to play on the prime material for that long would likely be more annoying than any use you'd get from the soul. There really should be something denoting the functions that gaining the soul of a powerful, good individual can be put towards as opposed to the soul of a commoner that you trick into doing bad deeds. Not a hard coded list, but just something to denote that there are some power level differences. |

Posted - 15 Aug 2012 : 07:17:26 It's certainly up to the flavor of the campaign. If that's something that is a factor in the campaign, then it should be noted in house rules or rules clarifications for that particular campaign.
I remember reading it in 1st edition, and even recall the Demodands/Gehreleths having similar limitations in 2e and beyond, but that was due to a deity itself (can't recall which) preventing the plane shift/summon spells from working.

I can also see the Holy Word and Banishment spells possibly having a power component to make this happen (see Complete Mage, page 135). I think power components were first introduced in Complete Arcane or Unearthed Arcana, so those tomes could prove useful as well. This would allow you an "out" for the 100-year block if done by spell.
I hope this helps. |

That's from 1st edition. Its been broken so many times that I wouldn't hold it to be a rule at all. To cover discrepancies, I'd probably say there's an epic banishment that can accomplish what you describe (not saying anyone's developed the epic spell and published it.... just saying that if there were a banishment spell that prevented a being from returning for decades, it should be epic. Maybe if you cast it on their extraplanar corpse they can't resist it, thus the rumors also that if you kill a demon outside their plane they can't return for a long time). |

3.5 quote: A banishment spell is a more powerful version of the dismissal spell. It enables you to force extraplanar creatures out of your home plane.
Duration not listed, however both versions indicate only extraplanar creature |
