Posted - 12 Dec 2003 : 22:58:37 I would love to be in fearun but with the transmution of my knowlage to toril's standart rather than our earth's However I would absolutely miss modern convecienses, so I would hire a wizard to take care of my casual problems. I wouldn't be a wizard for I haven't been a very good student for 20 years. I assume that I would be a fighter thief with cha/neu alg or maybe neu/evil I m not sure. However I would be a simple adventurer also working for everyone. I love north's lawless intrigues and I always longed for that kind of adventure and thrill

Posted - 12 Dec 2003 : 21:43:23 I would go to Myth Drannor at the time that Elminster was there to study magic as his apprentice. I would also go as an Elf. I love their history. I would also want to study healing and other clerical spells. Of course I would miss all these fine modern conveniences , but I think some have made us 'soft'. We tend to rely on them too much. |

Posted - 09 Dec 2003 : 01:36:33 well the portable holes r meant 2 be used 2 get what u put in back or transport the hole someplace else 2 get ur items back then, obviously u wouldnt want ur waste back so i think it would be easier 2 make and there4 less cost 2 own a "toliet" poratable hole. it could be made 2 dump the insides someplace else if it is 2 expensive 2 be able 2 get them back...if that made sense |

Posted - 08 Dec 2003 : 21:28:13 First, you'd have to be very rich to afford to "waste" a portable hole on toilet use (no pun intended). Though it would make for an interesting thing for a party to find, wouldn't it?
As for Damascene, it's steel, so mithril would be better. It's a technique, superficially similar to the "folding" done by traditional Japanese sword-smiths, that was used by Arabs to make superior swords in the Middle Ages. Europeans were highly jealous, but never figured out how to make the distinctive "water-steel" (called such because it had a unique wave-like pattern to it).
It was rediscovered by a guy in the '70s who is pretty famous for his custom knives. He thought it was just a curiosity (this was before custom knives came back into fashion), but when everyone started using it he probably regretted not applying for a patent. |

Posted - 08 Dec 2003 : 20:56:55 i am unfamiliar with this Damascene of which u speak, but would it be better then adamantite or mithril or similar materials? as 4 modern convinences, i really dont think that much would be given up...like toilets, what about a portible hole? or a very cheaply made bag of holding? or something of the sort. as 4 food, im not that picky n i think id be very able 2 settle on things, n after all, cows, chickens, pigs, fish, they all exist in the FR so whats the trouble with eating them? n with magic it would only make it easier |

Posted - 08 Dec 2003 : 00:16:29 Very good points, Mournblade.
A professor of mine said that if I were in such a world (though he was referring to the Middle Ages more than the Realms) I would have songs written about me -- no matter what I did or which side I was on.
First, I'm a pretty smart guy, and I know a lot of stuff that would be useful in the sort of place he was talking about. Gunpowder? Sure. Damascene steel? I know a bit. Medicine? I garuntee I could help there. Sanitation? You bet.
Second, I'm tall. That doesn't mean much in the Realms, where humans are about the same size as here, but in a place like medieval Europe, I'd be another Goliath; a skinny one, maybe, but I'm almost 6'4" in my socks. The professor pointed out (rather amused; he's only 6' in his boots) that they probably would have wanted me just for the intimidation factor on the battlefield.
A lot of that would be negated in the Realms. As I said, humans are typically about the same as here. Gunpowder's known. Damascene steel, possibly -- that might be the "masterwork" items. (Though, since the Damascene technique wasn't rediscovered until the 70s, it might work.) I can't hardly compete with magical healing, and sanitation levels are about on par with the mid-1700s.
Magic I ought to be able to learn. After all, anyone with the intelligence can do it, so I could. I'd be at the very least a 14, probably a 16. (I'm assuming that an 18 score is for an all-As student, which I ain't.)
I might go just for the magic. But I'd want a two-way portal, I'm certain of that. There's a lot here that I'd be giving up. My friends, modern convienences, my books (I can say for certain that there are some series I would be very upset not to finish!).
And "modern convinences" doesn't just mean flushing toilets (though I'd really miss those). It also refers to procurment of even such things as food. We take for granted that we can get so many foods in the supermarket, but it wouldn't carry over. No bananas unless you're by Chult or wherever they grow there. Oranges weren't intoduced to Europe until the Moors planted them in Spain -- are they served in Waterdeep? And a proper flame-grilled steak with a side of gravy-soaked potatos and a light bed of baby lettuce would be very hard to come by in the Realms. |

Well I think whilst we all love the Realms, to actually live in such an environment would be terrible. The odds of being successful and high nobility are quite low and most will probably be farmers struggling to make ends meet or be living in some city squallor. Very few would be adventurers as it very rarely pays off and whilst we are are heroic to some degree when playing D&D, being faced with the simplest of creatures will make you run a mile!!
As for taxes.... well you thought it was bad in real life.... just imagine it in mediaevil times!!!
There is one thing you are not taking account for Rad. You are educated. Assuming the common spoken in Faerun is the one printed in the manuals, than you would be far ahead of a farmer. I also imagine, where if you are not great with martial skill, since magic is so readily accessible, you probably would learn magic quite well. After all magic in faerun is not like Magic in Middle Earth. Magic is far more common on Toril. There are plenty of mages on Gandalf's level, (YES YES I know he is an Istari) in the Forgotten Realms. Gandalf's purpose was much more significant than a a standard wizard. He ran counter to Sauron, adn you did not have a slew of archmage's running around. So I think that a person educated would do quite well in a place like Faerun.
Unlike say the middleages, where you might do well, but most likely your ideas would seem heretical and you would be burned at the stake. At least the forgotten offers religious freedom without the Puritans around...

Ahh, well this is my point Malorik. Whilst we would all love to be as our characters are, being a swashbuckler for instance is not earning a living whereas farming or some such craft would. The pull towards the life of an adventurer would be great but it would have 99% of those attempting this lifestyle to go running back to the city to resume baking bread or some such. |

No worries, he's never at home anyway, he's always out wining and dining with the flunkies of the Black Network, making dodgy pacts and deals. I could even sneak in and catch laeral unawares, and put the crown of horns back on her head, Now that would be a laugh! |

But in truth, its futile talking about escasping the inevitable, there is no way in the nine hells that we could get there. |

Posted - 12 Nov 2003 : 23:25:08 Although I would prefer to perhaps take a few friends/family with me...at the end of the day if it was an now-or-never decision for me alone I would have to say that I would take it - not that I am bored with life in this realm or anything (although I do admittedly sometimes feel that way), I would do it for the completely new and adventurous experience. I would probably study magic and aim to be a mage, or possibly a Paladin...the main problem I would have would be from a Theological perspective - I am a Christian and don't know how that would fit in with FR mythology etc... |
Bayne |
Posted - 12 Nov 2003 : 22:23:39 As long as I could be any race, class, etc I wanted, then it would be fine by me...and of course if I could take my friends along with me, and allow them the same conveniences, then it would be exponentially better. |
