I love the lore to 3e and 3.5e so mich, yet I love the mechanics of 4e better and how up t date it is, plus the fact that it is current lore. I almost always go by lore and can't stand it when I don't, but the lore of 4e (pretty much only deity wse fr me) really killed me. Anyone wan to give some advice to me so I don't kill myself over this matter?

Is your DM willing to run pre-spellplague with 4e rules? (which works fine IMO)
Aryalómë Posted - 09 Mar 2011 : 11:50:51
The deities I was mad that got the ax were Kiaransalee, Eillistraee, Vhaeraun, and Mystra. The other thing I HATED was the time where cerain deiies were revealed to be "aspects" of other deities. Namely, Sehanine Moonbow, Hanali Celanil, and Aerdrie Faenya. They all lived in Arvandor so how could they he "aspects" anyway? It's like they're trying to destroy the cultures tha were set up and persisted in FR.

Talk to your DM about a compromise. If he is adamant about wanting to run the game post-spellplague, ask if it can be altered to have some of the elements pre-spellplague that you like. Talking helps

Ruels edition doesn't matter...I've considered using 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons with 4e Realms as a compromise with a friend who wanted to play there...do what you want!

Yes, there was some deity pruning but that doesn't necessarily have to happen in your campaigns. Just because there not mentioned in the FRCG doesn't mean they don't exist anymore. And I'd have to reiterate that the Realms still has about 3x the amount of deities/exarchs than any other 4E published setting to date.

Curious though, what deities are you missing? There were quite a few dwarven deities that bit the dust, though none of them were all that large in scale for their passing to make many waves. If anything, the heavy 4 are Mystra (which is apparently coming back), Helm, Tyr, and Elistraee.

So if you were to reinstate those deities back into the Realms, what changes? And as for the 4E rules in a Pre-spellplague Realms, there is really nothing that changes here either. My advise is to use the 4E rules that you enjoy and utilize and play in an era of the Forgotten Realms that you enjoy. Return Amaunator back into Lathander (slap the Good alignment on him instead of LG). Return the other deities back to their original state (Helm would be Unaligned, Tyr would be LG).

The only thing you'd have to retcon would be Sun/Moon/Star elves being able to Fey Step (big whoop). Dragonborn are already established in the Realms as those that underwent Bahamut's ritual as well as Dragon Kin, which are easily re-flavored. Lets see what else, classes aren't an issue as I'd say 95% of them have been introduced to the Realms in other editions.

So am I missing something difficult here?

There is post-Spellplague lore? I hadn't noticed. Since the catastrophe won't be happening in my Realms, yep, I'll just ignore it.

I have been working on a Realms setting in 225 DR using the 4E Rules and the 4E conceits. Narfell was the Tiefling empire, The Shoon are Genasi, Ebonfar is the current Shades and Shadar Ki. Undermountain is a Drow delve. Halaster calls periodic "Hunts" into the future Undermountain from Blackcloak Tower...

I don't see it as giving up, either. Making choices is what it's all about as a DM, and there's a LOT of stuff to choose from.

Also, you could even go with a heavily modified 4E Realms, keeping only the things you like and ditching the rest.

I work with 1st edition Realms (for the most part), and have chosen bits and pieces to add in from the later editions. I don't use any 4E lore, but I do borrow a lot from 2E. Yet, in my Realms the Time of Troubles never happened, among other things.

And for rules, we used to use AD&D rules until eventually switching over to Rolemaster rules. That's pretty different!
Markustay Posted - 09 Mar 2011 : 02:13:13
How is that giving up?

Who knows what the world was like in 1385? Anyone (or thing) can be dead and gone, or still going strong. Why limit yourself to one set of lore?

The day after the Spellplague, 4e rules apply, but the 4e setting doesn't kick-in until almost a century later (1479). That sounds to me like what you want, made to order.
Therise Posted - 09 Mar 2011 : 02:12:25
I've heard of many people who use the 4E rules and don't use any of the 4E Realms lore. Some of them use 1st edition lore, skipping all the later lore.

You could set your game in any Realms era, also. There are plenty of resources for the first age of Netheril, for example.

If anyone gives you grief over your choices, remind them it's a game.
Aryalómë Posted - 09 Mar 2011 : 01:58:11
Is that what's basically happening? People are just giving up o the lore?
Markustay Posted - 09 Mar 2011 : 01:52:21
Simple - use the 4e rules, and play in the Wailing Years era.

In other words, post 1385 DR, when magic (and the world) has changed. We know what its like a century later, but the day after the holocaust, YOU get to decide which lore applies. The best of both worlds - take your pick.
Tyranthraxus Posted - 09 Mar 2011 : 01:52:15
You can always play 4E in the pre-Spellplague era.
