In Baldur's Gate II (pc game) the soldiers in Athkatla have names like 'centurion' and 'legionary' and other such ones from Ancient Rome. I was just wanting to know if these ranks/titles are canon or exist only in the game and if there are any official sources on Arm's military.

EDIT: Whoops. Spelt *AMN* as arm.

Mod edit: Corrected spelling in thread title.

Yes, the ones that attacked Hlondeth.

Quale, what's the lore source for the Sleeping Legion?

Dungeon 69, also briefly mentioned in DDGttU.

I meant they're dwarves, aka the Knights of the Crescent Moon.

Generally a lot of armies in FR are called legion, with no thought about consistency, most undead armies are legions, Thay has legions (like the Griffin), the Shoon Imperium had legions, Chessenta has legions, there's the Argent Legion (Silver Marches), Scoured Legion (demons), Mithral Legion (dwarves), Tattered Cloth Legion (kobolds), Sleeping Legion (helmed horrors), Iron Legion ...

The term 'Legion', to me at any rate, should only be applied to armies from Chesenta, Chondath, or other areas in the vicinity of the Vilhon Reach (old Jhaamdath). It would sense for Sembia, I suppose, if they had a normal military, and also Cormyr, come to think of it (any nation having Dathite origins).

However, considering Jhaamdath's wide-ranging (but brief, comparatively) influence on central Faerūn, I could see how the word could have found its way into other languages as a generic term for 'a large, organized sub-portion of an army'.

No, in FR sources soldiers from Amn are called ''troops'', their ranks include generals, commanders, captains, majors. Other cities in Amn have different names for their guards, e.g. Gemguard in Keczulla, Barge-something in Crimmor, don't remember, Ring Knights, Harbor Guard etc. Check Lands of Intrigue. There's only the Golden Legion that invaded Maztica.
