Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 03:36:11 As I may have mentioned in another post, I'm currently working on a squadron of Elven Eagleriders. I'm equipping them all with a "Unit Badge" similar to Drow House Insignia, that will provide a featherfall effect and function as a ring of warmth. Do you think that it should provide magical communication between members of the squadron as well? It seems to me some form of "radio" would be necessary to coordinate movements and tactics in such a group. How do you think that should work? Any pre-existing spells? Some kind of battle-meld? Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm interested in hearing if anybody else has used Windriders, and how. And seeing any work you may have done, or care to share. Thanks, Scribes! |

Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 04:41:56 I would just call it a variant version of whispering wind or sending or whatever (just to determine range and general parameters) ... the exact spell used in your helms/amulets/Dick-Tracy-gauntlets doesn't matter as much as how it works and what limitations it has. Simply decide that the wearer of one of these items can instantly communicate with the wearer of any other when he wants. Perhaps have the items consume charges when "transmitting" so they're only used sparingly. Perhaps have them each use a fragment from the same crystal/gemstone (perhaps even mounted in a modular "socket" which accepts other gems). Perhaps even go Discworldian and have cantankerous little messenger imps rush from the ear of rider to rider carrying messages.
See my recent comment in the coinage scroll, about listening coin ... your riders might carry these coins in small pockets sewn into their hats. |

Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 04:34:05 How about a variant of sending, usable 3/day, and can only target other badge-carriers? |

Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 04:25:35 Yes, I had considered something along the lines of an Elven Mind-meld as well.
edit: Wow! back-to-back Star Wars, Star Trek references. that's got to be a first. |

Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 04:21:06 I had thought to give only the Lancers in the squadron helms (with crystal visors, of course) the Archers were to have only goggles, but you may be on to something there, Markustay. They'd be all painted up in custom colors too.

Do you mean the Aglarondan Griffonriders from Unapproachable East, Scribe Arik? That is indeed in my research, but no mention is made of communication there. I'll have to re-read Whispering Wind, but I don't think that allows for an "open channel," so to speak.
Edit: In fact, Whispering Wind delivers a message to a set, stationary location, so that will not work unfortunately.
Well there is always telepath spells. As a combat unit, it would be needed to only go token to token. Broad band is just not a good idea, you do not need foe to know your orders. |

Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 04:17:47 My first thought was a Helm of Communication.
I have no idea if there really is one, but it just seems to fit (with built-in visor, of course - no one wants bugs in their teeth or eyes).
And now I have the final scene from Star Wars stuck in my head (and I have to wonder if young Elves shoot Osquips 'back home' for practice).
I'm picturing a winged-helmet - something both knightly and Elfy-looking. |

Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 04:08:01 The 1st level spell whispering wind should work well.
They could also use hand/body signals, whistles, horns, shouts, bells, or whatever to communicate simple messages.
Probably quite similar to griffonriders, you might want to check them out. |

Posted - 10 Feb 2011 : 04:00:15 The timeline in my version of the Forgotten Realms is slightly out of synch, due to a number of reasons (ongoing adventures, availability of resource, etc.) Let's say circa 1365, after the shattering of Ascalhorn but before the Time of Troubles, Sir Stormedge. |
