Reincarnation, why is it not used more in the FR Stories? In my home brew worlds ive had many oppertunities to be Reincarnated into an odd race to play. I mean i understand that the chances of retaining your characters intelligence and personality is very high against you but it does happen from time to time. I played in a friends world once were all the partys clerics dead off before they could raise dead and the druid was the only person in the party that could save you if you died, which guess what? that meant your only option was Reincarnation. if you were really really lucky you just might, just might get Reincarnated back as the race you were before you died.

There was a reincarnation in one of the Netheril novels, but it was more like the real-world version and not the D&D version. The reincarnated person in question did not recall their previous life, and I don't recall any mention of how she had been reincarnated.

Since dead folks in the Realms generally go to hang out with their patron deities, I had a real issue with that.

I always partly thought that individual may have been a Faithless of some sort, actually. Which could help to explain part of why he was reincarnated in such a fashion.

Aren't they supposed to be nailed to a wall?

For the most part.

Reincarnation is just the poor man's resurrection. Even a limited wish or a raise dead is preferable than rolling something from those horrible little charts.

I agree with Wooly — if a player really wants to play some other race/class/character then it's probably better to just roll one up and swap them than to stage a murder/reincarnation ... there's no requirement for PCs to be "spiritually continuous".

I see reincarnation being useful as a story device, especially when "important" people like royal heirs and pharaohs are involved ... otherwise the spell is completely redundant. Completely redundant.

Reincarnation is fine, so long as it's used very, very rarely.

In the novel Circle of Skulls the protagonist reincarnates, although superficially explained. I can't remember did the Moonshaes and Druidhome novels had any reincarnations.

Ed has discussed this somewhat in past replies. I'd suggest a search of the "So Saith Ed" archives.

I did it with a Wish in mine.... but it was a special circumstance.

Well, the whole bringing someone back from the dead thing isn't mentioned too oft in the novels, either.

Most authors like to write about a character as originally envisioned I guess.

I understand what your saying Wooly. We Reincarnated characters because it was easier then rolling up a new character in the middle of a gaming session if it worked it worked if it didnt you had to sit out the session until the end of the day a roll up a new character afterwards. If it did work you could play as character races that were not normally allowed in our group, becuase there was no way of knowing what you would come back as. If you still had your personality and intelligence then they couldnt deny you from playing the Reincarnation of your former self. It made some really interesting game play and situations and im just surprised that this hasnt ever happend in the FR.

I think it's not used more because when you design a character, you have a specific race in mind. If you wanted a different race, you would have selected that other race... So why take a chance on coming back as another race when you could come back as yourself?
