not counting the difficulty you had beating her in the game, but her powers, resistances and melee capabilities. is that what a God would be to face toe to toe? |

Posted - 16 Jan 2011 : 03:56:01 well, she has some extent of controll over the "throne of bhaal" as she can summon creatures at will. she is immune to timestop. and has immunities no mortal really would have, be it epic or not.
but i agree that she was not a god, so therefore she had no divine abilities. i read in a sourcebook (forgot which, but i can find out if anyone is interested) that you have to be accepted before ascension by (i think) Ao hisself. and i guess, only then do you get access to alter reality etc.
the way i look at it is that she drew power from the essence and gained everything but the abilities, she could controll the realm, gained the god-like resistances, stats and spells. but all i know about deity stats are from 3+ edition. if anyone has some official writeups of an intermidiate deity from 2.ed it would be fairly simple to compare :) |

Posted - 14 Jan 2011 : 17:20:09 Demi/psuedo-powers are the only ones that CAN be threatened by a mortal.
Gods keep their primary essence locked within their Divine Realm, and anything a PC may encounter (outside of 'The Planes') would be an Avatar.
Demi-powers do not have Avatars, or rather, they have one Avatar (usually on the prime Material plane), which houses their Essence - they have no Divine Realm - so if you manage to harm/kill them, it is 'for real'.
And yes, their are an infinite number of variables and obscure scenarios possible, but that's the basic gist of how it works. |

Posted - 14 Jan 2011 : 16:33:07 Having played ToB several times, I never considered Melissan being a Demigod or something like that. She was one of the tougher fights, but still doing the ceremony at that time and thus not more than just a powerful mortal. Nevertheless the whole Bhaal essence topic with regards to the PC game series is a really interesting thing, which always brings up new questions and possibilities to speculate. |

Posted - 14 Jan 2011 : 07:40:44 I'd say a demigod would probably work, or else just an epic-level character, which is basically a demigod without the divine rank and special divine abilities. Other than summoning creatures, being immune to Time Stop, and rehealing every so often her god-like abilities don't really do anything that other high level bosses in the game can't do themselves. I wouldn't try to model her as anything with a divine rank since there are all sorts of crazy abilities that go with that, and the players stop her in the middle of her ceremony to become a god anyways, so it'd be fair to say she hasn't come into her own yet. If she had actually completed the ceremony she'd be untouchable even to the Bhaalspawn and his powerful allies, and then I'd model her as a lesser or intermediate deity. |

Posted - 14 Jan 2011 : 00:02:40 yeah, i've seen the mentioned books.. and yes, they seem untouchable. so what would that ammount to mellisan? demigod? |

Posted - 13 Jan 2011 : 22:46:18 A true god, one of the greater dieties, should be untouchable toe to toe. They should laugh at your attacks, ignore your spells as if they don't exist, and rewrite reality around you with a thought. Even an avatar of one of Faerun's greater gods should be something awe inspiring and in no danger from any PCs, take a look at Erevis Cale's meeting of Mask in an alley during the Twilight War trilogy for an example of how a near epic character's encounter with a god's avatar should go in my opinion.
That said, I'm sure there are lots of people who want their characters to fight/kill gods in a campaign, and if you are interested in that type of thing look at either Faiths and Pantheons of Deities and Demigods for gods stated out for 3.5e if you want a baseline for how powerful they are. |
