They were first published in 1E in the Fiend Folio which means they may have also been in White Dwarf before it became a house organ for all things Warhammer.

They were also mentioned in the 1E deity write-up for Raxivort, their patron, who is also the deity of bats and rats and a former servitor of Graz'zt (I think he was Graz'zt's master of slaves).

I think the Living Greyhawk Journal included a 3E write-up of them. As for 4E, they've been renamed "xivorts", a shout-out to Raxivort, and are fey humanoids and have been published in 4E's Monster Manual III.

I thought I smelled something... who xvarted?

And I always felt the 'Blues' were the updated, 3e version of them. If you want to use both, I suppose you could say the Xvarts were the 'failed attempts' at breeding Blues.

There was an ecology article for them in Dragon 339.

I think I recall an ecology being written up in Dragon magazine once (during its final printed years), but alas, I have them not with me to look up. Perhaps another scribe has more information.
