As much as I'd like to be smart on all things, I'm not. So here is my dumb question of the day.

Both in the 3.0 Forgotten realms campagin guide, and Lords of Darkness, both say that Thayans sell 0 level scrolls at cost if you buy stuff. Lords of Darkness give tokens to exchange.

What does this mean exactly? Say you bought a potion of cure, for 50 gp. Does this mean you get 50 gp credit for 0 level scrolls? Or do you get a free 0 level scroll?

I just don't get this part. It's confusing, and I feel really dumb. Can someone please explain it to me exactly how this works?

They use sweat-shops and undead child-labor

Does that mean that their slaves don't get any
union representation?

Both appear to say that you can buy a 0 level scroll at (core) book cost if you make a purchase (I would assume of equal or greater value). The 3.0 book infers this 'credit' must be used immediately, but the Lords of Darkness tome seems to allow for something akin to 'credit vouchers' to use toward future scroll purchases.

At least that is what am getting out of it. Normally they make a profit off of scrolls (I'm guessing a 2-500% mark-up over 'book value'), but are are 'having a special' on (crappy) 0-lev scrolls. I do not think you can apply the vouchers toward the purchase of higher level scrolls, buuuut... the very existence of 'deals' in these enclaves sets a precedent, and it would seem to me that 'bargaining' may be possible.

For instance, if a certain level 3 scroll sold for 5K GP, you may be able to offer them '3 for 14K', or they may allow you to turn-in tokens for higher level scrolls, but the face-value of the tokens is divided by the spell level +1 (so tokens used to purchase a 1st level scroll are only worth half value).

All it really means is that they may offer certain discounts and deals for 'good customers'. The prices are not necessarily set in stone.

They really are Thaymart.

Tokens are currency of the realm (enclave). That is you can sell things however instead of receiving copper, silver or gold you receive wood. The token will only be considered as gold, silver or copper within that enclave or setting.

It clearly follows that "Lords of Darkness give tokens to exchange." get paid for the spells, however not willing to spend their time of learning and casting minor spells. That instead they issue a token that allows the owner to demand of any 1st level caster (of proper class) to provide the spell. The spell-caster of course later would seek to redeem the token for metal or other magic items.

All it all it appears to be a way to control resources of the local level. Something like wooden nickles or community dollars these days. That is ways to keep the actual wealth in the community, by providing a minor service to those that seek it within the community.

I don't remember that section in either book (been awhile since I looked deep into 3E stuff on Thay).

Based off of your description I'd say the books are letting you know that if you buy something at an enclave...say a potion...then by doing so you earn the privilege of also being able to purchase 0-level scrolls—at what it cost the Thayans to make them—as part of the same transaction.

Not sure what the tokens have to do with the purchase process.

YMMV.
