Hello.
I would like to ask if there is such monster like the japanese demon/ghost called [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitsune]kitsune[/url] in the 3.5 edition. If not, what would be your suggestions on creating stats for it?
And on the note - Are there such monters in the Realms? Kara-Tur maybe? |

Well, there's a hu hsien updated to 3.5 in the EN World Creature Catalog, if you want to go that route.
Kobold Quarterly #9 has a 4e version of the kitsune. Fortunately, there's also a 3.X version for free on the KQ website right here. Hope that helps. |

I wanted to use her in a drow city as a "guest" from a far realm. Something like an independant power that's just visiting the underdark on it's travels. Maybe will stay a little longer and have some role in the campaign. |

As others have stated. The Fox Hengeyokai is the closest race/creature with official stats in 3.5 edition. It seems pretty generic to me, and I would only use it if I was looking for a PC race. Their favored class is Wu-Jen.
The Hu Hsien from 2nd edition Kara-Tur Monstrous Compendium seems a little closer to me; though I feel it has more of chinese flavor than japanese. Kitsune are found in both cultures. In fact one of the most famous, Tamamo-no-mae, is supposed to have lived in both countries imperial courts.
What use were you planning to put the kitsune to? |

Those are arcanaloths, there are other fox people like vulpinals and I think in Mystara and Rokugan, but who knows what's the connection between them. |

I personally regard the Kitsune as a Fox Hengyokai with special magical abilities. May be an 'Elder' version of the race (a template?), or perhaps simply a character class (kitsune being a Hengyokai mage). Not precisely accurate to the folklore, but it is an acceptable D&D rules adaption (IMHO).
Edit: Now that I think upon it, Kitsune have a more spiritual tone, so I think a PrC off of a Mage Hengyokai class would be most appropriate. Assume some sort of 'ascendance', similar to how mortals become demi-powers - once the PrC is complete the creature becomes part of the celestial beauracracy (with one foot in both worlds). |

Hengeyokai from Oriental Adventures is perfect. Shift between animal and human forms. Likes to trick people. Super vain. (Yeah, they can do different animals, but make it just a fox and your golden).
Alertenly, you can just do a were animal, maybe tiger or make it your own.
Yeah, I know they are different species, and wolf might be more fitting, but foxes seem so much like felines then caines to me. |

Not near sources, buuuut...
They exist in the Kara-Tur, which means they operate within the Wastes as well, which places a few far-wandering individuals within easy reach of the Unappraochable East, and therefor the Realms-proper.
They are considered a type of kami (spirit), as all oriental monsters are; Gaki (undead} and Hengyokai (shape-shifters) are considered specific sub-groups, and although technically kami (whch is used for anything both intelligent and para-normal), they are generally regarded as 'monsters' (non-beneficial or neutral kami). The word 'Yokai' literally means 'monster'. Hu Hsien is the name they go by in Shou and Tu'Lung, Kumiho in Koryo, and Kitsune on the two island nations.
The Kitsune is a Kami (Inari), not a monster, and sometimes referred to as an Oni (demon), but in oriental cultute/folklore, the difference between Kami and Oni is very blurred, and really depends more upon the individual and it's agenda (Asian spirits are neither automatically 'good' or 'evil' - they are people with specific goals and agendas, just like humans).
So if your kitsune/9-tailed fox* is bahaving in a good or neutral fashion, it would be referred to as a 'Kami'. If it is behaving in an aggressive, harmful, or self-serving manner, it may be referred to as a 'demon'.
Minor Note: Although technically Oni = Demon in Oriental culture, in D&D Oni refers to a specific race of fiends, so in D&D terminology Oni should = Fiend, NOT demon.
*I'm not sure if any edition's version of OA rules (or Rokugon/5 Rings for that matter) covered it, but in folklore the number of tails the fox has denotes its power. Think of them as a 'visual indicator' of magical level, with the number of tales equaling the spell levels available to the creature. |

A fox hengeyokai may also serve your needs (can be found in the Oriental Adventures 3.0 hardback, and would require very little conversion for 3.5). |
