Hello fellow scribes
Let me get this straight:
1- The Vyshaans, a sun elf city, started the first Crown War in hope to conquer Miyeritar, which they could not acquire peacefully
The Ilythiiri, a city of dark elves secretly worshiping forbidden deities, took this opportunity to start the second crown war against the Vyshaans allies
2- The Vyshaans take Malkizid as their patron and end up destroying Miyeritar (or so it is suspected), thus creating the High Moor (end of the first and third crown war).
The Ilythiiris continue their savage expansion, become more and more cruel. They end up openly worshipping Lolth and Ghaunadaur.
3- The Seldarine is pissed by the Ilythiiris, and since they are a dark elven community, they decide to banish every single dark elves to the underdark as drows (end of the fourth crown war).
The Seldarine is pissed against the Vyshaans, and the forced them to
give back the lands they conquered and the stop ruling Aryvandaar. The Vyshaans refuse and start the fifth crown war against all that is elven (basically). They end up utterly destroyed. The sun elf community not coming from Vyshanns is spared any retribution (you see where Im going dont you?)
Now, how were the gods fair in their judgement? They way I see it, while the Ilythiiri were certainly more at fault than the Vyshaans, their crimes were very similar. They waged war on their fellow elves, by pure greed of power, and both used the help of powers cast down by the Seldarine. The dark elves were ALL punished, while the sun elves were spared. Do I miss something in this story that would balance things out (or am I wrong in some of my statements)?

In any case, the Vyshaans were just the ruling clan of Aryvaandar. In Ilythiir, nearly ALL the elves were evil. Most of the sun elves of Aryvaandar eventaully turned away from the atrocities of the Vyshaan. Hence the "unfairness" of the judgement. At least the sun elves were smart enough to atone! The ones who didn't were executed. So no more problem. I think it boils down to the fact that Corellon realized the Ilythiiri had been lost, so he just did to them what he did to Araushnee, and cast them down. But he left them an out, with Eilistraee. Probably the ONLY reason they were not destroyed outright- he wanted to give them a chance to mend their ways, too. And of course some of them eventually did. Sounds perfectly fair to me! |

The gods of the various fantasy worlds/mythologies are *not* fair, nor are they omniscent. They're basically extremely powerful mortals, albeit immortal, and prone to the same follies and prejudices and hatreds that mortals are. Some deities are able to acquire wisdom and become much better about it, but at the heart, most deities are self-serving, manipulative, and reactionary.
So of course Corellon would punish his treacherous wife more than a wayward bunch of his children--it wasn't about the drow, it was about Lolth.

I see, so I guess it is as it looks like, Corellon protected his favorites and punished the favorites of his ex-wife. I guess I shouldn't expect impartiality from a chaotic pantheon. |

Note ... it is always Ilythiiri if you speak of them, singular and plural (much like with the drow), and Ilythiir was a realm, not a city.
The gist of your tale holds true, the reason why the Seldarine in general and Corellon in particular "lent a hand" was possibly that by then (and not at the beginning) the dark elves had turned to the largescale worship of Lolth, i.e. Corellon's traitorous "ex". The suns were "his" subrace and after cleansing them of the vile Vyshaan et al, they lived on. There is every reason for the post-Descent dark elves to hate the Seldarine, the suns and Corellon with a passion afterwards. In a very simplistic way thats the guts of it....basically two empires of elves banging heads & destroying all who get in their way before clashing head on. The Illythiiri probably would have 'won' if not for the intervention of the Seldarine..... |
