Posted - 31 May 2010 : 19:06:01 I'm doing some prep work for a game I'll be running in this area. I noticed on the map in Volo's guide to the Sword Coast ( p. 62 ) there is a map that shows the distance looks like about 10-15 miles between the two but it mentions that Shandalar's daughters travel to BG everyday from Ulgoth's Beard, hauling mushrooms with floating discs. Seems it would have to be a lot less than 10 miles between the two for a round trip everyday. Any info on the distance between the two would be most appreciated. |

Posted - 02 Jun 2010 : 06:56:45 I've walked similar distances cross-country (ie over low hills and through a forest) with a dog and a pretty heavy backpack and my 60+ year old father on tow. We manage an average of about 4 miles an hour. If we were fitter and did it regularly rather than once or twice a year, we could comfortably cover 20 miles in about four hours. Easily. |

Posted - 01 Jun 2010 : 07:56:17 According to the distance measurement tool of my Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas, the distance seems to be closer to 15 miles than it is to 10 miles.
However. According to the same tool, the "dot" representing Ulgoth's Beard on the map is 7.5 miles across, so things are a bit relative here. I would change the distance to suit the needs of your campaign. 10 miles would be feasible, I think, for a round trip every day, (back in old 2E, the basic move that could be covered by a walking human would be 12 miles, which is doubled if they can use a road or a trail in open terrain). If they use some other form of transportation (boat? horses? wagon? magic?) they can travel even faster. |
