Presented for your entertainment, the lyrics to several songs I have written that are set in the Realms. Many of these appear in my Realms net novel Flowers in the Wind

Time Passes By
A Cormyrean ballad

Time passes by as the evening sky
Floats into the night and awaits the sunrise.
Nightbirds and memories take wing and fly;
I still remember the field where he lies...
I still remember where my true love lies.

So long ago it seems I did cry,
So long ago as the world passed me by
My sad sweet memories still make me cry
When I remember the field where he lies.
I still remember where my true love lies.

He was a young man; strong, brave and true
He sought adventure and fame as a fool
Those took him from me, tearing my eyes.
I still remember the field where he lies
Yes I remember where my true love lies.

One day an offer for glory came near
he grasped at the chance to conquer his fear.
He joined an army, within their tide
I still remember the field where he lies
Oh I still remember where my true love lies

They trained him for warfare, to take away lives
They raised up his spirit, his soul flew awhile
They took away his fear, and love from his eyes
I still remember the field where he lies
O I still remember where my true love lies.

The day come when the battle was to be joined
He lined into his rank and drew forth his sword,
With the first flight of arrows the enemy let fly...
I still remember the field where he lies
O I still remember where my true love lies.

I walked through the field that very afternoon.
After the armies elsewhere had pursued.
I found his body, pierced in its side..
I still remember the field where he lies...
I still remember where my true love died...

I'll Follow
Daleland ballad, probably originating from Daggerdale

Sea waves roll by, carry light from the sky
Carry dreams far away to their homes in the night
I know there is somewhere that they lead tonight
And I'll follow them there, And I'll follow them there.

REFRAIN
I'll follow cross the highest mountain
I'll follow cross the deepest sea
I'll follow my dreams wherever they lead
Until they lead me back to thee.

Wind blows and teases music from the trees
And my dreams far away lie in their home tonight
I know there is somewhere the wind blows tonight
And I'll follow them there, And I'll follow them there.

REFRAIN

Clouds billow by, so graceful they fly
Carry imaginations dreams and give them flight
I know there is somewhere the clouds go tonight
And I'll follow them there, And I'll follow them there

REFRAIN

Thus travels me to a home I can't see
As I follow a road that has no end in sight
I know your at the end, I'll rest just awhile,
Then I'll follow it there, Then I'll follow it there.

REFRAIN

Listen Child

Listen child, to the song, the story I tell
Of long ago and far away...
Of a time and a place not unlike our own
Save for the power of the magic...

Listen child to the song now upon the wind
Floating across all the ages...
To the hearts of the people who cherish dreams
Written with love on the pages...

So carry me far on the winds of the dreams
Wait, for they'll take me there...
To the lands of the memories fallen...
And recalled only in the night.

Listen child to the words of the songs we sing
Echoing softly forever...
In our hearts we will always remember these
Forgotten realms of the past...

We can fly... We have wings...
We can soar... Float in dreams...
Carry me... So high...
On the wind... In the night...

Listen child to the song, the story I tell
Of long ago and far away...
Of a time and a place not unlike our own
Save for the power of our dreams.

Brighter Than the Sun
(The Love Theme of Shandril & Narm)

My love,
I hold my hand to thee,
My love,
I bar my soul to thee,
My love,
I give my heart to thee,
So we two shall be
Here eternally
Loving faithfully
Brighter than the sun.

The paths,
We walk beneath the sun,
Are long
As from our foes we run,
But though
Our trials seem to not end
Still we two shall be
Lovers faithfully
Tied eternally
Brighter than the sun

(Coda)
For love is flame that always lasts,
Even when everything else has passed,
And she can warm the soul forever,
Even when all else is gone.

And though
A heart may be strong
In flame
It can only last so long
For the brief
Candle has the brightest flame
And the memory
Shall eternally
Last with those who see
What's brighter than the sun.

So your memory
Shall remain with me
And you'll always be
Brighter than the sun.

What Do You Know?
Cormyrean Love Song

What do you know of what lies behind the
Horizon beyond where the eye can see?
What do you know of the love I hold for thee?
Tears fill my eyes and flow all about me!

What do you know of the tears I shed for thee
As you ride on to a distant crusade?
I softly watch your form fade in the sunrise
And stand as if stone as my heart cries your name.

What do you know of the perilous journeys
Across the land and sailed cross the seas?
What do you know of this fathomless distance
That has come forth and taken you from me?

What do you know of the rise of the springtime,
As flowers bloom open the power of Sune?
Their fragrances wafted by winds through the valley.
The birds sing their love songs and I cry your name!

What do you know of the beauty of summer
As nymphs and fairies bathe the world in green?
My heart calls out memories of you in the sunrise,
The cold of your absence all I feel and see.

What do you know of autumn's slow declining
As all life around me fades and falls away?
If beauty existed my heart took no notice;
The beauty of my eyes still lies far away.

What do you know of Auril's cold embrace?
Her ice cold hand driving winter's chilled breeze.
All of her fury cannot try to compete
With the cold of your absence which wraps around me.

What do you know of the coming of war boy
And what do you know of the battle's rage?
Only a fool feareth not Tempus' fury.
My fear is that this may take you away.

What do you know of what it is to kill boy
To take life away from some other like thee?
What do you know of the smitten foe's last cry?
Do you know death may taint all that you see?

What do you know of the pain of your absence
As I think upon you every passing day?
What do you know of the pain caused in cleaving
My heart in two as it ponders your fate?

What do you know of the dread of the new day
With no happiness for your heart to keep?
What do you of the tears with each new sun
Which rises as you still lie far, far from me!

What do you know of the love I have for thee?
What do you know of how precious is day?
What do you know of the life I'd give to thee
Or of the love fore its taken away?
Yes, of my love, fore death takes you away.

Where All Shadows Play
(Loviatar's Theme from Flowers in the Wind)

Where all the shadows play my dear, where all the shadows play.
We hold within your fear, my girl, hidden away from the day
We hold onto your past, little girl, your clouded memories --
Can you ever hope to outlast us, pursue the world to see!

Where all we shadows play my dear, we play within your dreams.
We play so far and we play so near, we play along with your screams.
We play men's dreams as instruments; them shatter without remorse.
We play mortals as foolish pets, and leave them no true course.

Where all we shadows play little girl within your heart so dear.
The corners of your soul little girl cloaked and hid by your fear.
The essence of your mind is soaked in tears you wept so long ago.
The fear of the evil within you finding - gaining all control.

Where all the shadows play; now see the shadows of the world.
Masters of night and day fear us, for we have all control.
Sages throughout all time have sought what we have always known,
But we'll tell you not all the secrets which control your poor soul.

Where all the shadows play on the stages of the world.
We fear no one and stay in control of hapless girls.
And you someday we will control even as we try now.
This thing be certain, don't delay us, don't be foolish now

Where all the shadows play, We shadows of the heart.
Where all we shadows play, this pain we shall impart.
Where all your shadows play little girl, come on and set them free.
Let all your inhibitions go - come and follow me..

Daleland Eulogy

Rest now, the day is over, your work is finished, the battle done.
Sleep now, beneath the clovers, a time of rest, your god's reward.
Cry now, shalt be done in remembrance of sacrifices thou hast made.
Rest now, sleep forever, I'll cry now, remember and honor your name.

Morning Praise of Lathander

Thus begins the new day, its birth is now complete
Now shall I seek my way to bind my soul complete"
Lathander guides each of us, where e'er our paths lead on
And may he safely guide me to see another dawn.

Tonight I Hear
(Cormyrean Tavern Song)

Tonight I hear whispers, tonight I hear songs
Of joy and of happiness, things joyful and fond
And I'll find the way through the night into day
And I'll find the way to your arms love,
I'll find the way to your arms.

Tonight I hear whispers and unsettled truths
And lies filled with vanity which bar me from you
But hinder me not from what's precious and true
For I'll find the way to your arms love,
I'll find the way to your arms.

Tonight I hear songs of journeys that took long
Lengthy years spent from loved ones fighting the throng
And they'll find the way to another joyful day
And I'll find the way to your arms love,
I'll find the way to your arms.

May Sune Return Me
(Traditional Ballad)

Selune doth slowly rise,
Her tears are close behind.
And as with her I slowly cry
For soon I must leave you behind, my love,
Soon I must leave you behind.

Tomorrow with Lathander's dawn
I'll go where earth meets the sky.
I'll go maybe not to return
Softly crying for you all the while, love,
Crying for you all the while

Fate awaits all adventurers dear
With every step they take
And I can go without any fear
For at journey's end you await, love
At journey's end you await.

I shall return to you my love
This promise I will keep.
If not your name on my lips love
Will be the last thing that I speak, love
As I go to my final sleep.

My journey may lead far and wide
To lands you'll never see
As far away as Shou Lung's skies
Or to far away Waterdeep, love
To far away Waterdeep.

I love you with all my heart dear
This truth no one denies,
May Sune return me to you
In your arms once again shall I lie, love
In your arms once again shall I lie.

That's all for now. There are others.

This is all very great work. I'm impressed.

I do have one question however. Does anyone have any good Dwarven battle chants?. The reason I ask is, I've exhausted all the Dwarven chants for battle I can find throughout the books, and I just thought somebody might have something that I can use.

Thanks all...

I don't remember very well, in July i guess, but u should take ur place now, by internet or something, cause there are not a lot and above all in Indianapolis, where i think there will be twice times more people.
I regret not to be able to go there, the last was so great. I think every player should go at least one time over there.

[Elmore is also a cool guy who loves Tolkiens poems ]

Have u ever read Tom Bombadils Balads? They are great, really
Edial Posted - 16 Apr 2003 : 07:52:44
first congrats, these are very good lyrics, you have very good composing skills.
second, i`d like to ask permission to use these lyrics for songs me and my band are currently making. i can`t really define our style, it`s a very sad gothic; perhaps the one song that is able to give an impression is one called 'at the dawn i wept' by a band entitled silentium.
with your permission, i`ll post the links at this forum as soon as we record these songs, we intend to include them on our first demo. i, personally, especially enjoyed 'i`ll follow', 'listen child', 'tomorrow mother' and 'flowers in the wind'.

thanks in advance.

Well done to both of you for such excellent work..."If music be the food of love, play on" as the great bard said.

Unfortunately I tried the link to download them but it seemed to be broken?!?

Unfortuantely I tried the link you put for downloading them but I got one of those '404 errors'...is the link broken or is it just my computer

At the last GC I met with Ed Greenwood and was able to sing to him "May Sune Return Me" and "The Leafturning." I had asked him if the music I had wrote for the latter was in line with his intentions for the song (It appears in Spellfire) He said yes. I promised at that time to have a CD ready for him come next GC, and collecting together all my Realms songs is a first step to that process.
[/quote]

When did you sing them to him. Wasn't it in the "Wizards of the coast castle" when it was his signing session.
Because if it's yes i was just behind you!
Lost Elph Posted - 26 Jan 2003 : 06:17:40
Oh wow!!! I wish I could write songs like that! Your both good I mean really really good Michael_Morris and Frey!
Michael_Morris Posted - 28 Oct 2002 : 05:29:00
I'm glad these were found to be entertaining. Here are a few more.

"Flowers in the Wind"
(Sonnet contained in the novel, engraved upon the funerary urn of Archmage Graniteheart).

Arching through the sky, flying all the while
Teasing grace and ease, float amoungst the trees.
Flow into my mind, in my heart to find
Pain sorrow and woe, tears easing the flow
Flowers in the wind waving to and fro
Where should I begin, where should I now go.
Tragically we fly from whence began our flow,
May I someday lie in peace within the world.
I pray to someday see through all that comes to be
A pattern to my life to justify its strife.
As flowers in the wind we are tossed about
We know not why our begin, our lives are filled with doubt.
Of where we come to die, close our weary eyes,
One last breath took deep, begin our final sleep!

"Path of the Heart"
(Title sonnet of Flowers in the Wind II)

Most dangerous is the path of the heart
But no path runs so true.
In love's name great ventures embark
To the ends of the earth as I to you.
For you see, love is the eternal thread.
Which links the hearts of all mankind
And if abandoned by a world mislead
Fear and destruction we'll find.
More dangerous though is the break of the heart;
Lost love can tear any eye.
The scar left behind is a horrible mark
Within which all bitterness lies.
But I shall pursue the path of the heart.
The struggle is worth the reward.

"Tomorrow Mother"
Cormyrean Ballad.

Azoun IV was known to hate this song quite a bit, to the point of banning it from performance at court - this despite it being one of the more popular ballads in the kingdom. Those close to the king while he lived believed that the reason had more to do with the memories the song evoked for him than the song itself.

Tomorrow Mother, I go to war
I go to battle the enemy horde
And if from that field I do not return
Do not cry, Do not cry
Such a death is honorable to earn.

Tomorrow Mother, I go to fight
I go to set great wrongs aright
And if this conflict takes me away
Do not cry, Do not cry
Such an end leads to happier days.

Tomorrow Mother, I go to stand
Side by side with my countrymen
And though many of us will leave this world
Do not cry, Do not cry
Victory shall be our reward.

Tomorrow Mother, I go alone
For the first time away from home
I shall miss you, it is for you I fight
And do not cry, do not cry
I shall be home before the night.

"Bonnie Lee"
A drinking song, probably orginiating from Baldur's Gate

Most of the songs I've posted have been serious or tragic in nature. This song is neither.

Bonnie Lee was a cavalier and a handsome man was he
He rode a horse that was snow white with long mane flowing free
He was bold and reckless as they come on this side of the sea
But one day his white horse came home, but never home came he.

Bonnie Lee had heard a tale of gold, a dragon far away
And so he set off to slay it upon a cloudless day
He came upon the cavern and there stood awhile to see
One day his great horse came home, but never home came he.

Carefully he stepped beyond the threshhold of that cave of gloom
He scoffed at the feeling in his heart that he was facing doom
And deeply he delved into the cavern where the dragon should be
One day his great white horse came home, but never home came he.

Bonnie Lee looked about in the cavern when suddenly it forked
He did not know which way to go and this could ruin his sport,
So he took the largest passageway that his eyes could see
One day his great white horse came home, but never home came he.

The dragon soon arrived outside and knew something wasn't right
The place had that distinctive smell of all too arrogant knight
The horse caught sight of the dragon, then bolted away free
One day the scarred white horse came home, but never home came he.

Bonnie Lee was pondering which way in the cavern he should pass
When the dragon came up behind and then fired up his ass
And when the smoke had cleared there wasn't much of Bonnie Lee
His horse did come back home that day, but never home came he!!

And here are a few of my 'songs':

Grmlulu's monster, a story adapted from the Drentons
[The Drentons are a Bedine tribe in Anarouch]

Grmlulu and Drilala had a daughter
She was only four weeks old
But she cried so loud and often
All day and all of the night

Grmlulu had a hard time
So one night he left his tent
And went outside the camp
Just to sit and moan and whine

''Oh, the noise this little monster makes!''
''Ah, my eyes won't get a wink!''
''Ooh, this miserable mouth to feed!''
''No, this creature's endless hunger!''

''Oh, how she controls my life!''
''Ah, so weary, still have to go on!''
''Ooh, how wonderful life once was!''
''No, I wish there was a way ... away!''

There's a rustle in the bushes
A group of Orcs surrounded him, fiercely
Overheard him all the time
Now one of them asked, ''Then, why don't you leave?''

Grmlulu looked up and sighed, ''I can't''
''Imagine this power a hundredfold,''
''Her mother holds up me leaving''
''Wherever I go my heart will burn!''

Grmlulu sighed and returned to his tent
- Talking always make annoyances shrink -
Perhaps these orcs had misunderstood him,
For at these words, they screamed and fled

Springtime
[A lovesong]

It was end of winter, nearly spring
The sun has come to meet us
We all came out the dark stone Keep
We danced and sang our hearts out

An' you stood near the bakery's ruin
The wind touchin' your soft hair
I saw you while you lingered there
I didn't dare disturb you

Then suddenly you turned your head
- Your hair unhasty followed -
And your wet eyes then met with mine
I saw a smile appearing...

It was like someone struck my head
My chest was filled with warm ice
I could not see anything else
The word at once was silenced

I must have seen you a thousand times
We played when we were children
But everything before was pale
Since I saw you that morning

When suddenly you turned your head
- Your hair unhasty followed -
An' I just gazed, nailed to the ground
The moment seemed like ages

I hardly noticed summer pass
'cause you were always with me
The miles we strolled, the thoughts we shared,
The times we were just silent

The thousand things that you have said
I word for word remember
Your eyes, your lips, your hair, your smile.
The way you talked and listened

And how you, sudden, turned your head
- Your hair unhasty followed -
That year, that early spring, that day,
The moment I first saw you

Then winter passed, it's spring again
But you are not beside me
My chest is full of cold ice, now
I know I'll never see you

Still think of you ten times a day
Remember every moment
Regretting why it stopped this way
As sudden as it started

Still see you how you turned your head
- Your hair unhasty followed -
Your tearful eyes, your silent smile.
My life will lack your colour.

/ Leather Armour
[an old song, found in 'the savage frontier' in the North]

A princess' honour was insulted,
By a prince of a neighbouring land,
The king -of course- was furious,
And revenge therefore on hand!

And there I was, in leather armour,
My sword still hanging on the wall,
When this king called upon me,
To share in victory 'n' all.

Knights and soldiers then we gathered,
Some mounted, most of us on foot,
Armed with shortbow, claive or great club,
And proud we left our neighbourhood

So there I walked, in leather armour,
My trusty sword in my right hand,
Over long and dusty roads,
Towards a near, unfriendly land.

On the heath fields, close to Oldhorn,
The enemies thus met,
One hundred men here, on the pink moor,
Two hundred foes there, to be slain

So there I stood, in leather armour,
My trusty sword right in my hand,
Started doing what I came for,
Chopping up people of this land.

On the third day of the battle,
Not many left then, foe or friend,
Another man fell by the metal:
The attacking king just met his end.

So there I fought, in leather armour,
My bloody sword in my right hand,
Fatigued, wet, thirsty, smelly,
Searching more to death to send.

But ''No!'', our brand new queen spoke
'This enmity we must forget.'
The dishonouring prince, well,
It was him whom she soon wed.

So there I stood, in leather armour,
My bloody sword still in my hand,
I'm told to be at ease right now,
I can return to my own land.

Three hundred brave young peasant men
Stayed there on Oldhorn's moor.
With them six brothers and some friends,
For whom soon wives will mourn.

So here I sit, in leather armour,
My rusty sword is useless now,
I watched for days these lifeless bodies
No reason to stand up at all.

Note: to be honest, great drizzt, (and why shouldn't I?) I always disliked long songs and poems in books, still skip them while reading LOTR. Still.. a bard can't do without them and it helps me to personalise the character's background.

Hmm, I could have used those horizontal lines in this post ...

Thank you. Some of them can be heard actually, if you have the patience to download 3 MB MP3 files (or at least a fast connection). Where All Shadows Play & I'll Follow were each incorporated into my Dusk campaign setting, although they were originally written with the Realms in mind. They are at
