Hey All

Just wondering if anyone knows when exactly Artemis killed that shade with his dagger? I know it was after he got Charions Claw. But i dont know if its actually written in any books about the encounter or not. And i havent really been able to find anywhere on the net that tells me much about it.

Cheers

You do realize that the majority of wizards don"t have quickened spells right? Or the few they have they save for better spells than a dispel.

Where was it mentioned that he thought he had them at a disadvantage? He was outnumbered by people who didn't have to use spells to kill him, and he had only his shroud of darkness/shadows as protection which most likely was dissipating as time passed by.

What good are those supposed "better spells" if they can be rendered useless by a spell of silence?

I don't know much of the lore on the Shades and Shadovar.

But is it possible that Rorli the shade was a sort of advance scout for the Netherese? Would they find such a scout useful for their purposes?

I looked up the etymology of the Real World name that Barrabus is based on, which is BarabBAS. Apparently it is Aramaic and translates as "burden-father". (This name has been Anglicized as "BarRAbas". Hmmm...accent on the RA...book written by RAS...coinkidink, you think? )

That can be interpreted as "burden of the father", or "burden upon the father", or "burden by the father".

If you've read Road of the Patriarch, then I think that might help clarify a possible meaning of the name, from Artemis's POV.

He was an advance scout. It was made clear that they sent many looking for artifacts from ancient netheril

Or another instance of inconsistency.

The story was very specific that Netheril had not returned yet. But was going to in the near future.
And most Shadovar casters are not high level princes with contingencies for everything.

A spell of silence is so common that only an idiotic wizard doesn't have a counter-spell against it.

Wasn't there a Prince (Purple Rain, Purple Rain) of Shade in the Realms, BEFORE the Enclave returned.

Melegaunt Tanthul, the most charismatic of the princes. He even managed to convince the race who are most doubtful of humans to go along with his plans.

His job was to "prepare" Toril for the return of Shade Enclave. Which he succeeded, at the cost of his own life. I'd like to see him return, preferably to be written by Paul.

Of course, if it's so common that everyone can cast it and counter, then no one will memorize it, knowing it will be countered. So no one will prepare the counter, knowing the spell's not going to be cast at them. And then one day, someone stirs up the mess by actually casting silence!

Not everyone. And some would [or should] still memorize it because Toril doesn't lack idiots who don't know how to counter it. Take for example a kobold newly dabbling in magic.

RAS's characters are protected by the world's strongest armor: plot. I wouldn't be surprised if one day they manage [even individually] to defeat Telamont, Szass Tam, Manshoon, and Larloch (not necessarily in that order).

still a must read. most anthologies have only a few good stories. is there any other info on why or how they got to bloodstone after they destroy the crystal shard?

Great story!

Not for me. That's the only story in Realms of Shadow that I skimmed through. Entreri and Jarl would have died if the latter didn't cast the spell of silence. The shade assassin was an idiot for not having a contingency against a spell of silence.

"When"?

Approximately autumn of 1367 DR, a "couple of months" since damaging the Crystal Shard in the novel Servant of the Shard.

Let's say Uktar/November.
Diffan Posted - 13 May 2010 : 02:39:41
It was a short story called "That curious sword" in the anthology Realms of Shadow. It took place at the time Artemis and Jarlaxle were in the Bloodstone lands and Damara.
