What exactly do Ioun Stones do? All I can find is their physical descriptions.

looked at it while I was at the gaming store, to see about getting rid of some old dragon lance novels... and 3 of the 4 add encyclopedias that had all the magical items that appeared in add.

those three books must go...........

If you are at all interested in Golarion's in-game Pathfinder Society, the book is well worth the price.

I like the idea of the stones circling the head of the user. It looks a bit silly, but it puts clear limits on the use of the gems and therefore makes them less powerful. Most players will be a bit hesitant about wearing them when walking a crowded street or when entering any area where Seelie creatures are to be found. And if they do try to use them out in the open, then thieves and pixies must be chased and found.

I really like the Pathfinder Version. A really fresh way of implementing them.

Apart from the Pearly White, there is no difference between the Pathfinder version and the standard SRD version. How is that a "fresh way of implementing" them?

I was going to ask much the same thing.. i looked at the pathfinder version and it looked pretty much the same... they float around your head and people can snatch or net them... i thought there was some new way of using them, like they were absorbed into the skin or attached to the skin in some way or something....

That's the one thing that keeps me from liking them more... Not only does that advertise their presence (which isn't always a good thing), it means you've got a magical item that someone can snatch away from you with just a bit of dexterity.

It makes me like them a lot more, it adds flavor to them.

I dunno. I don't like the flavor of them being so easy to steal. If you're taking advantage of your stones, even a simple level 0 commoner can snatch one away from you, and you won't necessarily be able to do a thing about it. At least with a magical weapon or armor or jewelry, they have to put a little effort into stealing it.

It makes me like them a lot more, it adds flavor to them. The thing two of the different players have done is take them out of the air & put the stones away in a pouch when they don't want them to be known such as they are walking around town. I enjoy the flavor it adds, so I plan to put one, just one, in each game I do. Also the fact that they are usually great for at least 3 or 4 pcs (out of 6) it is interesting to see who ends up with it.

They are one of my absolute favorite magic items. The way they spin in the air beside your head is just cool, gives your pc a lot of credit. Ordinary people should really sell for that as you are obviously someone important if you have one. In the last 3 games I've run I've give one stone out per game as treasure. The stone were ones that give you stat bumps of +2, first game was the con stone, then the dex stone, this game then str stone in my current stone.

The 'Nine Secrets' [which are gemstones that can be used to craft ioun stones] -- Amethyst, Chrysoberyl, Chrysoprase, Greenstone, Hematite, Laeral's Tears, Obsidian, Onyx, Sardonyx -- and Iol, are also detailed in Volo's Guide to All Things Magical and reference a little about their individual abilities.

The different stones confer certain abilities or powers.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#iounStones is 3.5 stones.
