Greetings greater sirs, I have a humble if not arrogant and insane question. Does anyone know of a class that one need not pay lip service to Midnight, Shar or a deity of any sort? In essence is there a class that can harness raw unrefined magic? I think a wildmage or spellfire is something along these lines but I am rather new to most of these and have only heard about them in passing. I thank you for you time and consideration.

I appologize for the lapse in a returning comment Cult_leader. I have been distracted doing research in the Far Realms. As for the Chaos mage... I have never heard of such a class but it sounds ever so lovely * Does a giddy little dance* To where might I find this hollowed information. I simply must know. In which tome, I inquire might this path to power be found? Already i have two tomes that offer power, (One offers power with a minimal amount of magic casting required), but this seems to be the correct path to follow the great Karsus into history. Err So where Can I find this Cult_Leader.. sir... please?

I didn't really read everyones post back to your comment. Make sure that you know this: The chaos mage follows no deity...., and is one hell of a broken mage class. 8th level you can auto counter any spell at will, any spell like ability at will? Yeah thats power, Keep in mind to be a chaos mage you have to follow one to the chaos mages paths. In doing so its going to put harm onto your char. If your char can survive making to to the 8th level. Then you best make sure to change to theif or fighter. Because IE, The stone like path slowly turns you into a statue with each level you gain in chaos mage. IE at four level I think it is, you have to constantly wipe your eyes free of a goo like substance or it will turn hard and turn you eyes into solid stone. Yeah not fun huh. Yes chaos mages find themslves unwanted. But if your looking for power then go for chaos mage, and BTW, spell fire has no effect on the chaos mage's magic. Its the counter part to reasonded and controlled magics. It basically takes all controled magic and makes it, pardon me when I say this, but it makes it it's bitch. Not only are chaos mages chaotic. But they normally dont follow anyone, They normally are letting their bodies go to hell for the raw power they get from it. My personal fave, Take the snake path. It slowly turns you into a snake. However you dont DIE from becomming a snake.

The Baatezu armies would probably be the "wiser" choice. At least they are Lawful Evil, and thus less likely to 'gut you out' as you say.

The Cardinal Posted - 08 Sep 2003 : 07:53:10
Ahhh the blood war.... The only true battle worth fighting...
But the sides are always so hard to choose... those you can trust ( enought that they won't gut you out right or those who offer power but are just as likely ro rip you to shreds if the mood takes them...
Usually I end up on the Tanar'ri side... (ended up enslaved to a marilith with my last char ) But I still know so little about it... Hmm Icewind Dale, eh Wyrm? Which one if I may ask?
*Sighs* so much to research so little time....
The Sage Posted - 08 Sep 2003 : 07:52:37
If I remember correctly, some of the general facts that were stated were a little off, but that could have just been because by the time IWD was produced, Planescape as a setting had long since passed.

Bookwyrm Posted - 08 Sep 2003 : 03:04:08
Gee, you must be an expert then. They didn't even say all that much in the first place!
The Sage Posted - 06 Sep 2003 : 05:48:46
That may be try, but some of the details that these demons talked about were incorrect...

Bookwyrm Posted - 01 Sep 2003 : 20:46:18
And fans of the Icewind Dale computer game will remember mentions of the Blood War in it . . . that is, if they actually bothered to talk to the demons before killing them.
The Sage Posted - 01 Sep 2003 : 15:19:15
The Blood War has had an extensive impact on the Realms, at least in my campaign. There is a scroll around here somewhere...ahh...here it is...that details some of the changes that have occured due to the Blood Wars influence on my campaign.

Anyway, Graz'zt imprisoned Waukeen, in the FR/PS adventure For Duty and Deity. It is available as a free download, just use the link I provided. It has all the details.

The Bleak Cabal..... ?
I'll have to do some more research and homework on Planescape
On another note and slightly change in direction,
Does the Blood War ever spill onto Toril? My limited knowledge has very little concerning the Baatezu and Tanar'ri laying waste to one another on Toril.... After all I think Toril, more specifically Faerun would be a great place to see armies of Baatezu, Tanar'ri and Celestial converging on. Of course maybe this is just mad rambling.
Graz'zt.. .wasn't he the one that imprisoned Lirria.... liria... lira... Bloody gods... * Looks up name* Lliira... I was close...
Oh and BTW How did she escape?
The Sage Posted - 01 Sep 2003 : 14:44:01
1) I do not believe that there is a Madness portfolio that exists within the FR pantheon. Although with the nature of deities and the multiverse itself, it would be incorrect to assume that there is not such a portfolio existent somewhere, on some Material Plane.

If you are that serious about this, perhaps you should research the Bleak Cabal faction of the Planescape setting. They come as close to worshipping 'madness' as anyone.

2) That's certainly an interesting idea.

Anyway, Graz'zt would probably be the more logical choice. Being the demon-lord who loves guile and secret planning, I am sure he would have a number of tricks and/or charms that might be useful for such a task.

The Cardinal Posted - 01 Sep 2003 : 09:34:49
Hmmm an intresting point,
So if Cyric's madness was only temporary and non-portfolio related,
1) Is there anyone that holds the portfolio/domain of Madness?
2) On a note more into the vein of this thread: There is no cannon class that pulls power directly from the cosmos? Umm to clairify, A magic user of any sort must pull magic from either the Shadow Weave or the Natural Weave?
I merely ask this because (Like Cyric) I have intense dislike for the Lady of Mysteries, She's far too nit-picky or aligned.I mean she does grant spells to those like Szass Tam, but given a choice she would choose not to. *snorts* Far to swayed for good as a giver of magic in my opinion.
I guess I must continue my search to cheat the gods... hmm I wonder is Demogorgon or Graz'zt would have any ideas...
The Sage Posted - 01 Sep 2003 : 06:15:14
Cyric's madness was not really a portfolio but rather a divine condition brought on when he unwisely read the Cyrinishad. It was the cause of his temporary insanity.

The Cardinal Posted - 31 Aug 2003 : 14:37:04
Yes Urza a intresting ( if not great character) Cyric's temporary Madness could almost be a Match for Uzra ( for whom I still mourn). But an intresting note on the planewalking and the supposed ability to be gained if one braves Pandemonium to find the site Harmonica... a suicide quest if nothing eles... But on a more Realms note, If Cyric is no longer mad, beign 'cured' as he is.. ( I coulda cured him with a very powerful warhammer all the same... ) Does this mean that the Madness portfolio is still ( or now is) up for grabs?... If so I smell a campaign or at the very least a Fan based story
The Sage Posted - 31 Aug 2003 : 14:02:18
Urza's abilities as a mage and Planeswalker really don't tie in with the D&D style of arcane spellcasting. But he's an interesting character nonetheless.

The Cardinal Posted - 31 Aug 2003 : 10:54:08
Actually If you can find it I would very much appreciate it. If you don't find it that's ok,If you do then send it to l_urza@hotmail.com but thanks Sage incase I forget....oh and if your asking, Yes I am a feverent fan of Urza from the practically defunct Magic the Gathering series but that was another plane another time...
The Sage Posted - 31 Aug 2003 : 06:37:57
I have a fan-created PrC called a Primal Sorcerer. It was originally crafted for my interpretation of magic in the Fifth Age of Krynn (pre-WoS). It is a mix of several different arcane spellcaster forms (including, but not limited to wizard, sorcerer, wildmage), and with a little tweaking, could be adaptable for Faerun adventures. I'll see if I can find a copy and email it to you.

The only time that has ever happened is when Karsus managed to "attain godhood with a single spell" when he brought ancient powerful magics on himself to save his Nethoril-ean city....the end result was his own demise....along with that of the at-the-time Goddess of Magic....(page 262, 3rd ed. Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Tome).

However, I think that a repeat of that horrible event sounds like a great campaign....the Master Lich is attempting to wrest magic away from Mystra without her approval...or perhaps a goodly mage discovers an ancient artifact of Nethoril that holds the secrets to Karsus' madness and seeks to detroy it....

Good stuff...
Zacas Posted - 30 Aug 2003 : 22:58:42
well you don't HAVE to pay lip service to ANY deity no matter the class... it's really your choice. Just if you don't worship a deity... and you die... you get stuck in Kelemvor's realm as a faithless...

Any and all forms of magic (other than shadow magic) are Mystra/Midnight's domain (In the FR that is)... that includes spellfire... if she doesn't want you to have it, she won't give it to you. But you don't HAVE to pay her lip service, it's just often a symbol of 'respect/thanks' for blessing the caster with their 'gifts'
