Posted - 22 Aug 2009 : 15:20:43 I have noticed some scribes have quotes within their signature's of characters from Realms novels. Most are quite humorous. So I thought I'd start a scroll where scribes can jot down some great pieces of conversation and timely remarks from novels and other Realms material.
Where possible, please reference your quotes with page#, title, and most importantly author. Afterall, it is their creativity for which we give credit. |

One more I find interesting:
"Swear no great oaths. Men who swear oaths are doomed to die by them. One thing hunts and hounds them—an' so, they waste and stunt their lives." -Helm to Elminster, The Making of a Mage by Ed Greenwood

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 04:54:42 I'm just finishing up Shadowstorm by Paul Kemp. I laughed heartily, after Riven, Magadon and Cale slay the shadow-wyrm, Furlinastis, and Riven says, "I need a drink and two women. Or a woman and two drinks. I'll decide on the way." Priceless. I'd, no doubt, feel the same way. |

Posted - 20 Jan 2011 : 03:39:36 I have been telling myself that I need to start taking notes when I read books to help recall characters and major events and to remember great quotes.
The two I came across recently that I thought were pretty good were both in Whisper of Venom and both from Gaedynn
"You realize this is stupid. Maybe not let's-go-to-Thay-and-fight-Szass-Tam stupid, but stupid nonetheless." That one's good because they did just that in a previous book.
This was after telling a wizard that he is to accompany Gaedynn (on Griffon back) to help him scout. Wizard:" I didn't ask to learn to ride a griffon." Gaedynn: "That's one of the advantages of military life. Your superiors provide you with interesting experiences you didn't even know wanted."
A good one from Aoth (that I hope I remember corretly) from the previous book: "I have lived and fought in Thay my lord. I doubt I will be impressed." |

Spellfire. I think the line was closer to "Well met, witch. I'm Torm, and these are my feet!" |

Posted - 19 Jan 2011 : 01:48:16 Personally like what Obould said to Drizzt before their second duel.
"Look around you, drow. This is my home now. My kingdom! When you fly on your pet, you see the greatness that is Obould. You see the Kingdom of Dark Arrows. Remember that name for the last minutes of your life. You die in Dark Arrows, Drizzt Do'Urden, and will be eaten by birds on a mountain side in the home of King Obould."
I just love the conviction. |

Agreed. I finished the book last night and I very much enjoyed the interaction between these two. So I'll add this quote from pg 332 which gave me a good chuckle...

I would have to agree. It's just another reason for why Danilo has become my favourite Realms character.
As for worthwhile examples, Elfshadow and Elfsong feature some of the best. The early sections of Windwalker also include a few of my favourite Danilo quotes. [I think it was Windwalker]

Posted - 24 Aug 2009 : 22:27:18 I got a bunch of them because I used to write them as I read.
The one that sticks out before I look up the others is by Anders Aricssen in the city of Ravens. He and Jack Ravenwild were haggling over the split of the gems they were about to steal from some foreign gentry when Anders noted something to the effect that if he has to fight their guardian demon he should deserve a greater split. Jack replied in a way that would make a politician blush. He asked him how he would define fight. I don’t have the exact quote but I believe Anders’s answer went something like this.
If its trying to kill me or if I’m trying to kill it.
Another one that sticks out is the Chasme(sp) demon that was summoned to carry the chosen group in book 6 of War of the Spider Queen. The demon that was carrying the draegloth, Jeggred commented that he couldn’t wait to land because this one is heavy and his smell is bad.
Some of the others laughed. You know you stink when a demon that looks like a fly says you stink. |

One of my favorite memories from writing Downshadow is crafting the scene in which the characters *quote* Danilo Thann, the famous poet, showing just how significant an impact he's had on the Realms. Actually, they compare notes on which of Thann's pieces are better for flirtation and flattery.
(And in case anyone's curious, that bit of poesy is the genuine article; I didn't make it up, myself.)

Ditto!
I did just now recall a personal fave, though. From page 61 of the old Forgotten Realms Adventures hardcover, a quote by Khelben Arunsun, speaking of Bigby of Oerth and his 8,491* Bigby's Hand spells: "The old goat comes up with one good gimmick, and beats it to death with a rock."
*This number does not include Bigby's Crushing Tactical Nuke. |

So, for an oldie from The Crystal Shard - Drizzt (before he became the epithome of Angst in the Realms). I may be off the mark a little bit (don't have the books here right now), but I am quite certain of the general gist:
Giant (just got the double scimitar treatment): "That was unfair!3 Drizzt: "Where in the Nine Hells did you get the notion that I would fight fairly?" |
