Part of the problem with such threads is that many people don't look at such things subjectively. A lot of folks want their favorite character to win, and thus won't accept that they could lose. Such discussions can get quite heated.

Another factor is that given one set of circumstances, one character would win, but given another set of circumstances, the other would win. A high-level wizard, for example, could easily best an equally high-level warrior, provided that there was a good distance between the two. But if they were standing toe-to-toe, the warrior's odds are much, much better.

And then there's the fact that many of these discussions have two totally unconnected people in combat with each other. A contest between the greatest warrior of Shou Lung and the greatest warrior on the Sword Coast might be intriguing, but what are the odds the two will even hear of each other, much less be able to fight?

So in general, we avoid those discussions.
