Just wondering -- is there any word in the New Realms on what happened to the mighty kraken sorceror Slarkrethel, founder of the Kraken Society?
It always seemed odd to me that such a powerful being should have gotten so very little attention paid to him in 3.5 outside of 2-3 references. I mean, we're talking about someone who had mind flayers and aboleths taking orders from him.
So, is Slarky alive, or did he get turned into calamari during the Sellplague? |

There's several "kraken" references in Grand History. If you have the original PDF, finding them in the printed source shouldn't be too difficult. There's a couple of brief references about kraken activity in the entry for "Deep Sashelas" in Demihuman Deities. Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark has several bits on kraken activity in the Underdark. The Kara-Tur books have info on Krakentua, as the ruler of the Isle of Gargantuas [the krakentua being an "immense monstrosity with the body of a man and the head of a kraken"]. See also the Monstrous Compendium: Kara-Tur for that one. Sea of Fallen Stars as well. And, finally, any source that covers the Kraken Society.

I happen to think the Kraken Society is pure genius - this thread has given me an idea, and I might blend the Abolethic Sovereignty into the Kraken Society (The Kraken Sovereignty?)
I'm just thinking a bunch of monstrous Squids and Octopuses are just so much scarrier (and cooler) the giant catfish.

I understand very well that he had land-based agents (without them, his organization wouldn't exist, eh?)
My point was that due to his own physical limitations, he had pretty much gone as far as a sea-Dwelling creature could possibly hope on land. He realizes that his 'power' is near-useless in controlling such distant agents, so rather then build an actual power-base - which would entice agents in power to 'go rogue' - he instead sets it up as an information brokerage, so there is no 'real' power to steal from him (like a city, or a country, etc).

Not necessarily - there are some air pockets in Ascarle (from FR5-The Savage Frontier: "over 100 humans trapped in air-filled ruins, some whohave lived here all their lives and never seen the surface.").
I also seem to recall, from Tangled Webs that Shakti Hunett had a meeting with Slarkhethel's mind flayer lieutenant in Ascarle, and the meeting took place in a "dry" room. |

As I recall, he did have some land-dwelling agents. I think he had a doppleganger of some sort in Yartar (which I could never find on a Realms map) fighting with the wererat-staffed and alhoon-led thieves' guild. And he had several agents in Waterdeep, at least one of them a priest of Umberlee.
BTW, slightly off-topic, but considering that it was stated that Slarkrethel had doppleganger and mind flayer servants living underwater in his 'home base' of Ascarle, does that mean that Realmsian 'gangers and flayers are amphibious? |

No new info as far as I know, but I kinda like the way they had him.
A little more would have been nice, or at least some updates, but he was one of those plothooks you could take any which way you wanted and not affect canon at all.
Also, remember he is pretty-much stuck under the sea, as are most of his minions, so surface dwellers really wouldn't have a whole lot of hard facts about him. I think his organization was about as ambitious as he could hope to achieve, given his physical limitations.
However, I'd also have to agree that at least knowing how the Abolethic Sovereignty felt about him would be kinda cool. |
