As some of my posts reflect, the road to “godhood” in the Forgottems realms (and other realms) is very intriguing topic. In comparison to say, becoming a lich , I’d say it’s atleast 10x as difficult... but definitely not impossible as history has proven. Anyway, I’ve been doing a little research on how some mortals have become gods and each case leads me to more questions.

Karsus - this dude was simply gansta. A mortal who actually devised a spell to sap divine power into himself from the goddess of Magic. What is really impressive is if he has succeeded, he would have made the leap from mortal directly to Greater God… But how did he fail exactly? I think Mystra basically had to pull the “kill switcc” on asll Magic. . I think he (Karsus) should have stopped as soon as he reached quasi- or demigod status, but he was just too drunk with the power. But I think Mystra might have let him get away with stealing that level of power.

Vecna
-ok I know it’s Greyhawk- but how did he make it to God hood exactly? It seems like he took the scholarly route and after many centuries he actually found ancient lore that pointed the way. He is god of evil secrets, so maybe always had it in him to discover this. But that leads me to the question, are there texts lying around somewhere which lay oot the process in detail? If so who would write something like this? I highly doubt the gods would.

Finder – Ok so he grabbed Moander’s divinity. But how did he defeat Moander? I read something about a para Ice elemental contained within the finder stone killing Moander on his home plane. Could someone elaborate on that because as it stands, that sounds highly dubious to me.

Bane, Myrkul, and Bhaal. Basically used brute force to defeat some forgotten demipower and from there worked their way up to Greater god status. They lucked out because Jergel basically gave away much of his divinity to boost theirs.

From all of these events I have deduced the following. The logical path to “do it yourself” divinity”is to slay a demipower and then work your way up from there if need be. Apparently there is a form of mortal magic (beyond even :High” magic)that is powerful enough to take out a demipower. It’s probably EXTREMELY difficult to find this magic, let alone use it but it has been done. Going from mortal to anything over demipower (lesser god, Intermediate, greater) is not possible without divine assistance. (But is this really not up for contention at all?) It seems like Karsus would have been successful if he could have found a way to distract Mystra’s efforts beforehand…

yup, thats pretty much what he did. It was a great novel and well worth the read. :) He basically destroyed Moander and somehow obsorbed his divinity.
I feel it's important to note that more recent sources reveal Moander as not being completely dead. There's a nice follow-up to what Moander is up to in Powers of Faerűn; it builds on Realmslore from Volo's Guide to the Dalelands -- see the section on "Tsornyl."

Good, good... I've missed Moander's influence in the Realms. I have that book but sadly, its pretty low on the reading list right now. I only skimmed through it when I first bought it.

It was Tymora.

-I am 'gansta', right?

-The spell [i]Karsus' Avatar[i/] was cast, and it worked fine. Everything went as planned. But, as you said, Mystryl "flipped the circuit breaker", and reset everything, so to speak, causing the spell to fail mid process.

-Think of it like this: The power went out suddenly on your computer while you were downloading something. Your computer shut off, and and then turned back on. The file that you were downloading, though. It became corrupted, and messed up other files on your PC.

-Other deities who were once mortals include (but is not limited to, to be brief):

Savras
Azuth
Shevarash
Red Knight
Velsharoon
Clangeddin Silverbeard

The part about Finder is in Song of the Saurials, the third book of the Finder's Stone trilogy. If you've never read them, it's very much worth tracking down those books, and the others by those two authors (Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb).

Finder's Stone -
Azure Bonds
The Wyvern's Spur
Song of the Saurials

Masquerades (which is a sequel to the prior trilogy)

Finder's Bane
Tymora's Luck

(These two are books 1 and 3 of the Lost Gods trilogy; book 2 is a Dragginglance book, and does nothing for the trilogy other than intro a single character).
