Anyone else playing this?

I've played quite a few games so far with an Elven Cleric of Kelemvor (standard greeting: "Hello there. Have you thought about Death?"), and its quite fun. For a tactical minuatures wargame with some RPing tacked on, that is.

More seriously though, I've managed to create and sustain a degree of deliberate cognitive dissociance with regard to the 4e FR setting, but then LFR isn't known for its deep RP anyway, despite my best efforts.

The scenarios so far have been very hit and miss, with some good and some not so good (I've played six so far, and my cleric just hit 3rd level). One thing I've noticed is that quite a few of them hark back to 1375 Realms in the lore that they explore.

"Living Forgotten Realms"? That's funny.
For the Realms to be living, they'd need to be retconned back to 1374, give or take a year, and keep Halaster and Khelben alive. Killing those two was worse than killing Elminster would have been, imho. And don't get me started on the Silverhand fatalities...
Nope. I refuse to turn this into a rant. Suffice it to say that the Realms (as an official published setting) are a dead world, maybe not economically as far as Wizbro is concerned, but certainly in feel and atmosphere as far as I'm concerned. I'm creating my own post-1373 timeline that keeps some of the big events (Anauroch disappearing due to Shade's melting of the High Ice, war between Cormyr and Sembia) and completely changes others (the only gods I've killed off are Tyr and Mask, who is done in by Shar after she fails in her plot to destroy Mystra and usurp the Weave... and loses the Shadow Weave to Mystra in the process, making Mystra more of an unaligned ("neutral") power).
If I wanted a world like the 4E Realms, I'd play Eberron.
Anyway, as has already been said, having fun is what matters. StarBog, if you're having fun, more power to you... do you know anyone who wants to buy some mint-condition 4E core books? I've even been handling them with latex gloves on (for self-protection) since my first perusal. ;-) jk... but they're in like-new shape.

I must admit that from what I have heard, and perhaps due to my personal situation (I've been a dad for six months now... ), I find myself completely indifferent to LFR. Don't get me wrong, I used to play in the RPGA in the days of the Living City campaign, so I understand the attraction one might have towards organized gaming.

But now... I've had a really good group for the last 3 years, all with understanding wives, and we have our little thing every Tuesday night, like clockwork. Our time is really precious, and we have become very resistant to (bad) change. We have two winners in our hands, in our opinions: 3.5 rules, and the Realms. Why would we move away from a winning combination? Life's too short to trudge along in the muck trying to find bits of new gold when you're sitting right on top of a proven, successful diamond deposit...

On Topic - Way back right after the GHotR was published I began being troubled about this. I have decided that I would give the LFR a chance if I ever got a chance to play in it, but that chance has not presented itself yet. As long as they do not require me to purchase a copy of the 4e FRCG. I downright refuse to support the changes in any financial way.

Hehe. I carry a copy of the 3e FRCS about with me, opened usually at the entry for Kelemvor so I can rant IC at people in the appropriate fashion

To be honest, for anyone who has half an idea of the Realms, you don't need either the FRCS or the FRPG to play LFR. You might need to borrow it for 5 mins at some point if you're taking a specific feat (and thus need to copy it from the book), but apart from that, no one (in my experience) really cares.

I enjoy bashing the 4go‡en ®elmz as much as the next 'Grognard', but if you are having fun, then thats what its all about.

It is just a game, after all.

To be honest, I haven't participated in a D&D game in so long as a player that I would jump at the chance to play in a 4e FR game, despite my misgivings. It doesn't make you a hypocrit - it just means you are able to seperate your feelings from your common sense.

Heck... I'd even play in an Eberron game, its been so long...

Markustay! take a hold of yourself man!

Do like I do: recruit players and be the DM. Don't have a group? recruit one!!

Vive le Québec Libre!

Yeah, I'm having fun, but I'm simultaneously sad at what could have been. 4e FR could have been the 1375 FR with bolts on.

You think so? I meant what I said sincerely--if you're having fun, that's what matters. One person has already invited me to play in his own version of the 4E Realms, and I think I might try it out. That doesn't mean I'll ever truly "accept" the new Realms, but an invitation to a game is another chance to play. That's how I look at it.

One thing I will add is that from what I have experienced so far, LFR would have worked equally well in 1375 DR. If you can put aside this, its quite an enjoyable pasttime, but yes, sometimes you have to grit your teeth and just bear the rampant plot-holing that has went on.
