Posted - 08 Sep 2008 : 23:19:35 Good day lords and ladies of the realms, throughout the realms there have been many great products and probally some great reviews. Yet there is always that little nugget of realms lore that starts a great campaign of helps develop that great background story every player wants to develop.
So in this thread please give the product and some usefull lore that has come to your attention. i hope that this becomes a usefull thread as it could tip off a DM to that exact bit of info that He/she could be looking for, and maybe prompt someone to go and buy the product to help develope there campaigns.
Thank you for your time and consideration and i will wait to post my own thoughts, so as not to derail the thread straight away:) Good day and cheers! |

Posted - 17 Sep 2008 : 09:29:17 All products covering the Sword Coast North, right back to FR1 and FR5. My personal favourite location is Ascore, and in particular the pentagonal pyramids under the ruins. There's apparently an NDA on them... which must mean an agreement not to disclose anything, in print or otherwise, because they should have been dealt with in Lost Empires of Faerun, which is by far my favourite 3.x product... although Serpent Kingdoms was awesome too. Everything after LEoF suffered from excessive restrictions of page counts, but most of it was otherwise good. Power of Faerun and Dragons of Faerun, in particular, both should have been 192+ pages; 240+ for DoF. I still lament the absence of sourcebooks for Anauroch, Cormyr and the Dalelands/Sembia/Moonsea region, though; those last four titles released would have been awesome sourcebooks, and as it was, they made rather disastrous adventures in the grand scheme of the storyline. |

Posted - 15 Sep 2008 : 21:10:57 there's a lot of good books. One of my favourite is Empires of the Shining Sea! A Masterpiece. I've used a lot of lore about the Lions Tribes and a hidden city of seers in my RttToEE Campaign. Even the story of the magical sword in Thornwood gave me ideas for an adventure. |

That book brought me back to D&D and also the FR. It's still for me the gold standard of all RPG books. |

Posted - 11 Sep 2008 : 22:39:53 The book I've found most usefull is the GHoTR. So many little tidbits about so many different places, times, and peoples. The one I've found most usefull is the blurb about the Dwarves who tuneled all the way to Maztica. I've got great plans for that one, oh, yes I do...
In related news, I just picked up the original Gray Box, the Kara-tur expansion (AD&D), and The Horde (2nd Ed.), all in mint condition (including maps!) for a grand total of $23! I was shocked, to say the least. I hope to find many campaign ideas and hidden lore in those three boxes! |

I have based an entire series of campaigns using the info in Cormanthor, Empire of Elves and Fall of Myth Drannor around the Baneblades of Demron, I've mapped out the Eternal Srinnala fortress in the Moonwood, am in the process of mapping out Myth Glauroch, and am proof- reading a guide to Myth Drannor for turning in here. I also plan to write up the dukkars prestige class (when I figure out how to create prestige classes). |

These two are good, but Faiths & Avatars was better. ;-)
I wrote Faiths & Pantheons meaning Faiths & Avatars... Sigh! I'm aging
(Every single FR campaing I mastered since 1996 owes something to F&A) |

Posted - 10 Sep 2008 : 11:50:13 The old 2e hardback 'Forgotten Realms Adventures' is probably up there simply because of all the city maps in it but the one i have simply enjoyed reading the most is either 'Lords of Darkness' or 'Dwarves Deep.' I can't decide between these two. |

Posted - 10 Sep 2008 : 00:57:10 Ed's "Border Kingdoms" POLYHEDRON articles.
As I see it, the Border Kingdoms, perhaps more so than any other part of the established Realms, are designed to be easily customised for particular and/or individual home Realms campaigns -- complete with swiftly shifting borders and ever-changing rulers. So there's plenty of room for changes and/or the addition of new details for your game.

...and Grand History of the Realms (Brian R James) is very handy for quick refence when writing backgrounds or histories to locations. |

Posted - 09 Sep 2008 : 14:52:08 For me, I think it would have to be the old (gold box) computer game "Secret of the Silver Blades" and the lore about the Dragonspine Mountains and the city of New Verdigris. I've set several campaigns in New Verdigris over the years, including a Realms adaptation of the G1-3 modules. It's a useful town. |

I have found the Volo's guides series as one of the most refrenced in my campaigns. The Sword coast has one of the best Cities that i have used over the years. Found on page 186, it has no set lords, as the High mayor that changes yearly, light armed forces, and two temples one of a good faith and the other is evil. The population is exp. expecting everyone on the streets to be 4-5 level, which gives PC's alot of options for trainers early in there careers and to keep them in check as they advance in level. The area is riven with adventure, never lacking in monster or Zhent activities.
