Are there any creatures in Amn (circa late 1370 DR) that have scaleskin that could be tanned into boots for Amn's discriminating merchant class? A material that can be rendered into something leather-like (eg, in RL like alligator leather). Such boots are for Amn's ostentatious, status-conscious merchant class--not warriors. So no scales of a hard, metal-like substance. And definitely not from a magical creature such as a dragon. A type of tanned scale hide that such that a very limited trade could exist in them, as valuable items.

There might be some wyverns up in the Cloud Peaks mountains, I would think. Anyone know if wyvern hide can be worked into something soft enough for a relatively comfortable boot? Any other types of creature come to mind?

Scaleskin boots could also be imported to Amn, certainly. But again, the animal hide would have to be tanned into a leather, and not from a magical creature. The more exotic the better, though.

Any ideas? Tnx in advance for the help! :)

These are great suggestions, thank you!

Btw, come to think of it, the scaleskin really could come from anywhere in the Realms. Athkatla receives import goods from every corner of the globe. Kara-Tur, Zakhara, anywhere at all.

How about the scales of the many different nagas. You might want to check out the Serpent Kindom Sourcebook to see what many different versions of those exist. Dark-, Guardian,-, Spirit-, or Banelar-Naga e.g. and especially the skin of an Iridescent Naga is beautiful. All nagas are rare enough and usually live in remote and isolated places. Further they are no easy foe to kill, smart and cunning as they are, so hunting them is no minor task.

In Halrua there is a great breeding program with behirs. Think about the idea that the failures of this program may be sold – even if the serpentine monsters are magical, it would be a nice explanation why the leather is available to the right buyers
